Spider-Women is an upcoming American animated superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics Spider-Women characters Gwen Stacy, Jess Drew, and Silk, produced by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation in association with Marvel Entertainment, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. It will be a spin-off from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) and a film in the Spider-Verse franchise, which is set in a shared multiverse of alternate universes called the "Spider-Verse". The film will be directed by Lauren Montgomery from a screenplay by Bek Smith. Hailee Steinfeld reprises her role as Gwen Stacy / Spider-Gwen.

Sony began development on several spin-offs from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse before that film's release in 2018. One of these was a female-centric project with Montgomery and Smith attached.

Development[edit]

By the end of November 2018, ahead of the release of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) the next month, Sony Pictures Animation had begun development on several spin-offs from the film, due to the "incredible buzz" surrounding the project.[2][3] One of the spin-offs, described as "gaining traction" at the time,[3] was a Spider-Women film focused on three generations of female, Spider-related characters.[4] The popular character Gwen Stacy / Spider-Gwen from Into the Spider-Verse was expected to be one of these characters,[2] though no final decision had been made.[3] Bek Smith was set to write the film,[4] with Lauren Montgomery in talks to direct and Amy Pascal returning from the first film as producer. The other producers of the first film—Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Avi Arad, and Christina Steinberg—were all also expected to return for the spin-off in some capacity.[2] The project's female focus was attributed to the #MeToo movement and the successful DC Comics film Wonder Woman (2017), which already inspired other female superhero films.[4] The next month, Pascal confirmed that Hailee Steinfeld's Spider-Gwen would be featured in the film alongside Cindy Moon / Silk and Jessica Drew / Spider-Woman, and said that the sequel to Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), would serve as a "launching pad" for the film since it also includes Spider-Gwen. Pascal also clarified that the version of Silk that would appear in the film would be distinct from the previously announced live-action film about the character that was in development at the time.[1]

Lord and Miller were confirmed to be producing the film in April 2021, when the project was undergoing rewrites.[5] Pascal and Arad reaffirmed that the film was in development in May 2023, when Arad said it would be made sooner than expected, while Steinfeld expressed interest in the film.[6]
