State of Crime and Science (abbreviated SOCS) is a Spanish Hard Rock/Nu Metal band formed in 2018 in Asturias. The band's actual line up is composed by Osana K. (vocals), Víctor Pérez Torres (guitar), Marc Segond (guitar), José R. Ibáñez (bass) and Iván Fernández (drums).
The band was created by Víctor Pérez Torres and José R. Ibañez, based on song ideas by Víctor. They rapidly recruited Osana K. for the vocals and shortly after, recruited Marc Segond at the drums. With this line up, State of Crime and Science started to work on new material while searching for a second guitarist.
As finding a guitarist that would suit the needs of the band was resulting challenging, they decided that Marc would switch to playing guitar and a drummer was recruited. With this five piece formation, the band kept working on original songs, defining its sound and strengthening its identity between Hard Rock, Progressive Rock and Nu Metal.
In 2021, their drummer leaves the band for professional reasons, and Iván Fernández fills in at only 17 years old. This will lead to the actual line up,[1] and to the release of the band's first EP: "Lost".
To date, State of Crime and Science has released two EPs and one single. A third EP is to be released in 2024.
Discography[edit]
First EP: Lost (2021)[edit]
Lost is the first ever recorded work from the band. The EP is entirely self-produced, each member tracking their parts either at home, or at their rehearsal studio. Mixing and mastering was made by Marc Segond at his home-studio.
Although the songs were written before Iván Fernández had joined the band, they were recorded by the final line up, thus including Iván on drums and Marc playing guitar.
This first EP features 3 songs: "Lost", "Should I?" and "Prevail". Those three songs are already representative of what will be the style of the band, mixing Hard Rock, Progressive Rock and Nu Metal.
The single "Lost" was nominated in the "best rock song" category at the Premios AMAS 2022,[2] and got positive reviews in specialised independent press.[3]
The Rain (2022)[edit]
"The Rain" is a single song released by the band as a successful first attempt at including strings arrangements and more unconventional drum parts. The song was nominated in the "best rock song" category at the Premios AMAS 2023.[4]
Again, it was entirely self-produced, following the process the band adopted for "Lost".
Through the Mirror (2023)[edit]
Through the Mirror is the second EP of the band, and clearly shows an evolution in both sound and song writing. Although Víctor Pérez Torres stays the main composer, the other members get more involved, letting transpire their influences in the five songs of this EP. This is also the first time that lyrics in Spanish can be heard in a SOCS song ("Tanto por Hacer").
Willing to improve their sound, the band keeps recording their parts at home except for the vocals. To record the vocals, mix and master, they hire Diego Teksuo, who gives a heavier and more modern sound to this EP.
This EP features 5 songs: "Through the Mirror", "The Hole", "Under", "Release" and "Tanto por Hacer", and is opened by a 30 seconds instrumental introduction.
This EP got very positive critics from the local specialised press.[5]
Through the Mirror videoclip (2023)[edit]
In 2023, SOCS is signed by the label Tunguska Media Factory,[6] and releases with them a videoclip for the main song of their last EP: "Through the Mirror".
Live shows[edit]
State of Crime and Science started to play live in 2022 in local venues like Angeles y Demonios (Gijón), El Tizón (Gijón), La Lata de Zinc (Oviedo), La Jungla (Avilés), but also in rock contests like Oviedo Rock (2022)[7] and FestiAMAS (2021, 2023), for which the semi-final shows and interviews were broadcasted by the RTPA.[8][9] SOCS won their semi-final and reached the final in 2023, performing on the main stage in Oviedo.[10][11][12]
