Sunday Cyriacus Umeha (born 20 February 1983) is a Nigerian Lawyer, Lawmaker and Politician. He was elected to the National Assembly in the February 25, 2023 House of Representatives election to represent Ezeagu/Udi Federal Constituency (Enugu West Senatorial District) of Enugu State in the 10th National Assembly on the platform of Labour Party.

He is currently the Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Justice[1] as well as a member of the 37-Man House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review.[2]

Political career[edit]

Hon. Umeha was elected as the Councilor representing Akama-Amankwo Ward in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State in 2012. He served in that capacity for three years under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In 2015, he contested the primary election of the People's Democratic Party for the office of Member representing Ezeagu State Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly and lost out in controversial circumstances. He challenged the outcome of the election at the Federal High Court, sitting at Enugu and subsequently at the Court of Appeal when he lost at the lower court. Ahead of the 2023 House of Representatives election, Umeha ran on the ticket of the Labour Party and polled 25, 850 votes to defeat Dr. Festus Sunday Amaechina Uzor of the PDP who scored 24, 300 votes. Umeha's win over Dr. Uzor who was then, the immediate past Chief of Staff to the then Governor of Enugu State – Mr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, was one of the major political upsets of the 2023 general election; which was a fallout of the political revolution that characterized the 2023 general election thanks to Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate.

House-Committee Membership and Leadership[edit]

Rt. Hon. Sunday Cyriacus Umeha currently serves in a number of roles in the House of Representatives. Some of the critical leadership positions include: Chairman, Nigeria-Ethiopia Parliamentary Group; Member House of Representatives Constitution Review Committee; Member House Committee on Public Account, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC); Member House Committee on Power, Insurance and Accrual Matters amongst other adhoc roles.

Education[edit]

Hon. Umeha had his primary education at Community Primary School, Akama-Oghe and Housing Estate Primary School. He subsequently underwent post-primary education at Anunciation Secondary School, Nike, Enugu. He later pursued a degree in law at the Enugu State University in the year 2003. Upon graduation in 2007, he proceeded to the Nigerian Law School in 2008. Having passed the Bar Exams, he was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2009.
