Dr. Sydney Selvon (March 24, 1948[3] – August 26, 2021[4][5]) was a Mauritian journalist, editor, and historian known for his significant contributions to the media landscape and the documentation of Mauritius's cultural and political history. Throughout his extensive career, Selvon held key editorial positions in Canada, Australia, and Mauritius.[6][7]

Sydney Selvon's career spanned several decades, from 1972 till his death, and encompassed a range of roles within the field of journalism. He served as the Editor-in-Chief of Le Mauriticien, a daily newspaper in Mauritius. His editorials were created to spark national dialogue and influence public opinion on various socio-political issues.[8][9]
Selvon was involved in founding and leading journalism organizations in Mauritius. He played instrumental roles in the establishment of the Association of Journalists of Mauritius and the Mauritius Union of Journalists, advocating for ethical standards and professional development within the industry.[10][11]
In addition to his editorial responsibilities, Selvon authored several books on Mauritian history and culture, including "A Comprehensive History of Mauritius" and "Port-Louis Harbour." His publications contributed to the preservation and dissemination of Mauritius's heritage.[12]

Sydney Selvon's academic background provided a solid foundation for his career in journalism and historical research. He received his primary education at St. Jean Bosco Roman Catholic Authority School in Mauritius and pursued secondary education at Royal College, Curepipe. Selvon's academic achievements include distinctions in subjects such as English, French, and History.[13][14]
In addition, Selvon earned a doctorate in History, specializing in Journalism, from NWMD International University in South Africa.[15][16]
Publications[edit]
Sydney Selvon's publications reflect his dedication to documenting and interpreting Mauritius's history and culture. His works, including "Vacoas-Phoenix: La genèse d'une ville" and "Ramgoolam," offer insights into many aspects of Mauritian society.[17][18]
Noteworthy among Selvon's publications is "A Comprehensive History of Mauritius," which provides an account of the island's evolution over centuries. Additionally, he has contributed to translations of books such as "Lower Your Golf Handicap in 10 Days" by Nick Wright.[19][20]
