Taproot Wizards is an Ordinals[1] collection created on the Bitcoin blockchain. Launched in February 2023, Taproot Wizards features a series of 2121 wizard-themed Ordinals, drawing inspiration from the iconic Bitcoin Wizard image that became a symbol within the cryptocurrency community[2]. The collection and project, has generated significant attention for its creative approach and historical reference to the Bitcoin ecosystem.
Background[edit]
The project was founded by Udi Wertheimer, a noted Bitcoin advocate. Wertheimer's vision for Taproot Wizards goes beyond the typical profile picture (PFP) project, aiming to reignite interest in Bitcoin and its potential for innovative applications similar to what can be seen in the developments of the Ethereum blockchain.
Notably, Wertheimer orchestrated the largest block and transaction in Bitcoin's history to announce Taproot Wizards, a move that caused both interest and controversy within the Bitcoin community[3]. The block, approximately 3.96 MB in size, contained just 63 transactions, one of which was a 3.92 MB Ordinal inscription of a wizard image. The block's near-4 MB size was made possible by utilizing the Taproot upgrade and the Segregated Witness (Segwit) fork, which, combined, allowed for this increased capacity, previously limited to 1 MB[4]. The inscription of the "Taproot Wizard" image highlighted the use of the Bitcoin blockchain for creative and diverse applications beyond financial transactions. The block's size and its content sparked debate within the Bitcoin community. Some Bitcoin maximalists and developers, perceiving the large image as misuse of the network's capacity, criticized this development. It, thus, marked a significant moment in Bitcoin's history, demonstrating both the technical capabilities of the blockchain and sparking a debate about its appropriate use[3].
In November 2023, Taproot Wizards, successfully raised $7.5 million in a funding round. This round was led by Standard Crypto and involved the participation of several other investors, including Geometry, Collider Ventures, StarkWare, UTXO Management, Bitcoin Frontier Fund, Masterkey, and Newman Capital[5][6].
