Tarundeep Singh Anand (born August 30, 1973) is an Indian entrepreneur[1] known for his role as the chancellor[2] and founder of Universal Business School (UBS)[3][4][5] which has been renamed Universal Ai University in Mumbai.[6][7][8] Prior to his involvement in academia, Anand served as the chairman and managing director of Thomson Reuters, South Asia.[9][10] He has represented India in international rugby tournaments.[11]

Early life and education[edit]

Tarun Anand, the son of Gurdip Singh Anand,[12][13] who is recognized as a management consultant and visiting professor at Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies. Tarun received his education at Green Lawns High School in Mumbai, and pursued his undergraduate studies at H.R. College Of Commerce & Economics, affiliated with HSNC University. Later, he completed his MBA at S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research in Mumbai, and pursued executive education programs at Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, Tuck School of Business and IE Business School.[14]

Personal life[edit]

He is married to Harneet Anand, and has two children.[15]

Anand says that as a student he represented his college at tennis and cricket. He represented India playing rugby.[16] He has a passion for mountaineering.[17] In 2010, Anand also enrolled himself with the Colaba Sailing Club, which is associated with the Royal Bombay Yacht Club (RBYC).[18][19]

Career[edit]

Tarun Anand began his professional journey as an intern for HSBC , subsequently gaining experience under the tutelage of Harshad Mehta as a research assistant, primarily engaged in assessing criteria for stock selection.[20] In 1991, he commenced employment with HSBC, followed by a tenure at Standard Chartered Bank [21]in Mumbai starting in 1997.[22][23]

In the year 2000, Tarun assumed a position at Reuters India, now known as now Thomson Reuters[24], eventually ascending to the role of chairman and managing director for Thomson Reuters, South Asia.[25][26] Concurrently, he served as a director on the board of ANI.[14] Transitioning in 2005, Tarun relocated to New York City where he undertook the role of global head of the treasury division and played a pivotal role in the establishment of Fxmarketspace.[27][28][29][30]

In 2009, Tarun Anand resumed his position at Thomson Reuters as managing director for South Asia[31][32][33][34] and subsequently assumed the role of a founding member of the Reuters Innovation and Venture Board.[35][36] Concurrently, he became a board member of the Strive India Education Foundation alongside Gurdip Singh Anand and Babulal Mulchand Varma.[37] Additionally, he co-founded Universal Business School (UBS, Karjat).[38][39][9] He also started the UBS Olympics in a partnership with SVS.[40]

During his tenure, Anand contributed to the launch of Eikon by Thomson Reuters in India in 2010[41]. From January 2010 to January 2020, he collaborated on and co-presented the 'Red Dot' experiment, which aimed to illustrate the influence of culture on visual communication.[42] In 2012, Anand established a real-time trading centre within the UBS campus, offering access to various global stock exchanges.[43]

In 2019, Anand announced a partnership focusing on social responsibility with B-School students, collaborating with Light of Life Trust in Mumbai to raise awareness through initiatives such as dental camps and tuberculosis awareness programs.[44] Additionally, he participated in discussions on the socio-political impacts of COVID-19 as part of the Horasis forum.[45]

In 2021, Anand introduced the Happy Campus project, aimed at mitigating common obstacles to student learning while fostering comprehensive development and enhancing the student experience.[46] Similarly, in 2022, he spearheaded the WOW initiative, which sought to provide a sustainable and scalable solution across all facets.[47][48]

Within UBS, Anand established an Incubation Center[49] and an Artificial Intelligence, Emerging & Foundational Technologies (AIEFT) Innovation Hub in Karjat through a joint venture with the Vitti Foundation.[50][51] This initiative facilitated a strategic shift in Universal Business School's focus toward artificial intelligence (AI), culminating in its transformation into Universal Ai University, heralded as India's first AI University, in January 2023.[52][53]

Awards & Recognition[edit]

In 2020, Tarun Anand was honored with the Distinguished Diamond Jubilee Alumni Award by H.R. College of Commerce & Economics in Mumbai.[54] Notably, Universal Business School received recognition as "The Most Upcoming Business School in India" in 2013 by ASSOCHAM and Ministry of HRD.[55]

Anand has been acknowledged for his contributions to education, being named Education Evangelist of India in 2020 and receiving the Global Goodwill Ambassador title in 2018 from Great Place to Study[56]. Moreover, in 2023, he was conferred with the Education Evangelist of India title by Inspiring India.[57][58] Additionally, SPJIMR, Mumbai recognized Anand's entrepreneurial endeavors with the Excellence in Entrepreneurship award in 2023 for his significant contributions to the field of education.[59]

He is an education speaker[60][61], environmentalist[62][63][64][65] and columnist.[66][67][68][69][70]
