Draft:The First National Bank & Trust Company of Newtown

  • Comment: Need to decide if the article is about the historic building or the bank. The cited source does not state it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. I checked the NRHP database but did not find it. If it is in fact listed, then the building likely meets notability for buildings. For a company, it has to meet the guidelines in the gray box above. (Also, HMDb and Waymarking.com are user-generated so not reliable sources). S0091 (talk) 18:51, 26 February 2024 (UTC)

The First National Bank & Trust Company of Newtown is an independent community bank headquartered in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.[1] It operates 12 branch locations and a Wealth Management division.[2] The bank is listed in the National Register of Historic Places[3] and is the oldest bank in Bucks County.[4]

History[edit]

The First National Bank & Trust Company was founded by Barclay J. Smith in 1864.[5] The bank was first housed in the Paxson-Croasdale Building on South State Street in Newtown.[6] It later moved to the County Clerk's Office where it stayed until 1884 before relocating to its current location.[3] In 1928, a brick building was constructed around the original brownstone structure that used stone sourced from the Newtown Quarry.[7][8] The following year, a clock was installed outside the bank as a gesture of appreciation to the community that the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) deemed a noteworthy structural addition for placement within the database.[3][9] In 1957, the bank underwent renovations, including the addition of a drive-up banking lane.[3]

Operations[edit]

The First National Bank & Trust Company expanded from one room in the Paxson-Croasdale Building in 1864 to 12 branches throughout Bucks County as of 2024.[10] It has remained an independent bank throughout its history.[1][11]
