The Ramp Restaurant is a local restaurant in the Mission Bay neighborhood of San Francisco. They serve a wide variety of foods, mostly American cuisine.[1] Their "signature" items include The Ramp Burger, House-smoked Ribs, the Award-Winning Bloody Mary[2] and a variety of seafood, shareables, entrees, and alcoholic beverages.[1]

History[edit]

The Ramp was established by Jim and Donna Elkin in 1950 as a bait shop beside a boat ramp.[3] The business eventually added amenities such as a hot dog machine, a bar, a single slot fryer, and a steel grill. A real estate investor, Mike Denman, acquired The Ramp in 1983 and led the first renovation of the business which added a full-size kitchen. During the 1980s, Denman secured a twenty-year lease with the Port of San Francisco. Under the leadership of Denman, The Ramp transformed into an iconic restaurant and bar, and eventually the bait shop aspect of the business was eliminated.[4]

The Ramp Restaurant expanded to operate with a sister business, the SF Boatworks, which performed maintenance and modification work on boats.

In the early 1990s, one of the real estate partners attempted to take over the business and sell it. In 1992, following a court battle between the partners, a new partner named Arvind Patel joined The Ramp. Under the joint leadership of Patel and Denman, The Ramp began the second renovation. A heated outdoor tent was installed to allow the restaurant to operate year-round. The Ramp also began featuring live music weekly. Other strategic investments were made by the partners as well.

Mike Denman passed away in December 2018, leaving Arvind Patel as the sole proprietor of The Ramp Restaurant. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, The Ramp underwent the third renovation. A new patio was built and the interior of the restaurant was redesigned. The restaurant expanded westwards with a large Astroturf outdoor seating area.
