The Sentinel Publicatio (English: /ˈsɛntɪnəl ˌpʌblɪˈkeɪʃən/) (Motto: Where minds converge, where history is written) is a student organization at Adamson University the fifth top institution in the Philippines.,[1] within the Basic Education Department.[2] Known for its active presence on the campus. This organization provides updated issues and write-ups, contributing within and outside the university.

Description[edit]

Mission[edit]

The Sentinel Publicatio is dedicated to fostering a platform for expression, creativity, and critical thinking among students in the Basic Education Department. To inform, engage, and inspire through quality written content and thought-provoking issues

Structure[edit]

The organization is structured into five roles: include writers, photographers, editors, layout artists, and cartoonists.

Roles[edit]
  1. Writers:
    • Responsible for crafting researched and articulate articles that cover a wide range of topics relevant to the student body.
    • Contribute to the organization's goal of promoting informed discussion and awareness.
  2. Photographers:
    • Capture images[3] that is part of a written content.
    • Showcase the events within the whole university.
  3. Editors:
    • Adjusting the content produced by refining grammar, style, and overall clarity.
  4. Layout Artists:
    • Design visually and reader-friendly layouts for both print and digital platforms.
    • Enhance the overall appeal of the issues.
  5. Cartoonists:
    • Creating cartoons with the perspective to the issues and topics covered.

Integration[edit]

The Sentinel actively integrates the efforts of students throughout the Basic Education Department. By providing a platform for diverse voices, the organization strives to create a sense of unity and shared expression among the student body.

Through its publication, The Sentinel has become a cornerstone of intellectual discourse and creative expression at Adamson University. It serves as a testament to the talent and dedication of the students within the Basic Education Department, fostering a culture of curiosity and engagement.

Works[edit]

The Sentinel Publication, the media and press organization of Adamson University, transcends its role beyond the Basic Education Department. As the premier source of information, analysis, and creative expression, The Sentinel Publication has expanded its reach to cover almost the entire university,[4][5] to coverage and community engagement. When crafting issues[6] under the The Sentinel Publication, a process is followed that encompasses copyright procedures and thorough consultations.

Every piece of news by this student organization should be true but is also a faithful representation of actual events. In the editorial section, the articles take on a distinct context as they become a canvas for individual opinions to be published.

Within its photographers who capture the events, providing a visual narrative that complements the subsequent write-ups. The organization's cartoonists who contribute illustrations aligning with the content of the articles. This collaborative approach where written, visual, and artistic elements converge to deliver an issue to the students between the Basic Education Department. The Sentinel Publication is a prominent media and press organization at Adamson University with special permission access to document and cover events within the university. Recognized by both Adamson University and the Basic Education Department (BED).

This organization is dedicated to producing content in various forms, including written articles, print issues, and multimedia content. The Sentinel Publication holds special permission access to university events, allowing its members, referred to as student journalists, to capture and document the activities taking place on campus and publish it. This access enables the organization to provide coverage of events and create a valuable archive of university life. university-wide recognition, the Sentinel Publication collaborates closely with the Basic Education Division (BED) of Adamson University.

This collaboration ensures that the works produced by the organization reach not only the university's higher education students but also those in the 'basic education sector.

All issues produced by the organization are not only printed but also shared through various digital platforms, including social media platforms such as Facebook. The organization is not limited to traditional print media; it is actively engaged in videography and editing. This multimedia approach allows the Sentinel Publication to show preferences in consuming information. By employing media formats, the organization remains at the forefront of modern journalism.

The Sentinel Publication's work are organized into three distinct categories: Sentinel, Kalatas, and Lumiere. In the Sentinel, a different write-ups of student works are showcased, showing every context of different writing style. Moving to kalatas, this section serves as a compilation of literary works did by students, compiled in a book that reflects the literary of the university. For the Lumiere season, the Sentinel Publication undertakes the task of creating and editing the yearbook for graduating students.

The Editorial Board[edit]

'The editorial board of The Sentinel Publication plays a role in making a context with journalism. The individuals at the helm of this part bring a leadership in one division, and should be contributing to the publication's success. The selection process for editorial board members involves a voting system wherein each member has the opportunity to cast their vote for individuals they believe should occupy the position. The elected members of The Sentinel Publication's editorial board will also undergo an induction ceremony to formally inaugurate their roles and responsibilities within the organization.[11]

Publication's Head[edit]

Mr. Roel G. Selva is the Publication's Head. Responsible for overseeing the entirety of The Sentinel Publication, he provides strategic direction, mentorship, and support to the editorial and creative teams. Mr. Roel G. Selva has served as the longstanding head of the publication, he trains the editorial board alongside other dedicated members. In addition to his role in the publishing domain. Mr. Selva brings an expertise as a science teacher. He earned his Bachelor of Secondary Education with a focus on Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Biology. This educational background not only underscores his commitment to the field but also enhances the editorial team and the academic community at large. Through his dual roles, Mr. Roel G. Selva continues to have an role in fostering a culture of excellence in scientific education and publication. Mr. Roel Selva assumes responsibility for the arrangement (layout) of the student manual.[12]

History[edit]

Sentinel Publication can be traced back to its establishment(1985), serving as a source of information and documentation for events within and outside the Adamson University. The organization has gained recognition for its commitment to journalistic excellence. It has been a partner of the high school department since the 1960s, but its name was changed to "Sentinel" when it was officially founded in 1985. The organization's mission is to produce a yearbook every luminous season and "Kalatas," a compilation of students' works.

The Sentinel Publication's current and active Facebook page, "The Sentinel - Adamson University,"[24] was recently established by the Publication's Head (Mr. Roel G. Selva) and Editor-in-Chief (Lance Dominique T. Carbon) in the year 2023. While the page is still in the process of development, it serves as a platform for uploading events and information, named "The Weekly Sentinel."[25][26][27][28][29][30][31]

About the consultant[edit]

In the academic year '23-'24, the Basic Education Department at Adamson University welcomes a new leader at the helm. Dr. Lorna Espeso has assumed the position of Principal,[33] succeeding Dr. Daniel B. Saroca, marking a significant transition in leadership. Beyond her administrative role, Dr. Espeso assumes the position of Consultant for The Sentinel Publication.[34] In this capacity, she serves as a valuable resource and collaborator for the editorial board and contributors to ensure that the publication remains aligned with the educational goals and values of the Basic Education Department.

Achievements[edit]

On the occasion of the feast of St. Vincent de Paul on September 27, 2023, the entire university came together for a grand event known as Pasinaya.[35] This event featured a film-making contest, wherein each college and the Basic Education Department (BED) engaged in spirited competition to showcase their creative prowess. Among the participants, leaded/edited by Louis Vergel B. Ebora (Associate Editor in Chief), also edited by Samuel Gloria Cerbito (Member) and directed by Mr. Roel G. Selva (publication's head) Basic Education Department and Sentinel Publication's film named by Mr. Selva "Huli"[36] (Theme: Mahirap, Mayaman.. Nagbibigay, Tumatangap.- "in english" Poor, Rich.. Giver, Receiver) only took part but also emerged triumphant, securing the ("Best Supporting Actor" name of the award) award for Mr. Selva in a resounding victory that added an extra layer of accomplishment to the event and the organization.
