History[edit]
Cade Williams, Evan Nork and Adam Cohen began collaborating on various music projects in 2016 while attending Amity Regional High School in Woodbridge, Connecticut.[1] In December 2017, Williams released the album Can't Pave Love under the name Mirror Waves, which featured contributions from Nork. Cohen joined Mirror Waves in 2018 and the three recorded a sophomore album entitled Tiger Blood, released September of that year. In early 2019, the band changed their name to Them Airs, as they felt that the name Mirror Waves no longer fit their sound.[2]
The band began to amass a following through their exuberant, unpredictable live shows [3] and the release of subsequent albums Echo Park Bomb City (2019), Union Suit XL (2020) and Doped Runner Verse (2020), the last of which caught the attention of internet music critic The Needle Drop.[4] While the core trio of Williams, Cohen and Nork remained consistent, the band cycled through additional members before settling on keyboardist Amina Rustemovic[2] and guitarist Luke Schroeder, who joined in 2021. With a lineup in place, the band released singles Exploded Whip and VR Fletching in 2022[5] and the EP Viper Island in early 2023, which saw them incorporating elements of electronic dance music into their sound.
Musical style[edit]
The band have a disjointed approach to songwriting, preferring to stitch both pre-written and improvised ideas from different members together[1] and often avoiding verse-chorus form. Their sound and musical approach have earned them comparisons to experimental rock bands such as This Heat, Deerhoof and Thinking Fellers Union Local 282.[6]
