From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tokai COBEX is a globally operating company headquartered in Wiesbaden, Germany, specializing in the development, manufacturing, and distribution of carbon and graphite products. The origins of the company can be traced back to the Siemens brothers (Gebr. Siemens & Co - Gesco) in 1878. Tokai COBEX has been owned by Japan's Tokai Carbon Ltd. since its acquisition in 2019.[1].

Production[edit]

The current product portfolio is organized into five distinct groups: Cathodes - cathode blocks for aluminum smelting, Carbon Electrode and Soederberg paste for metallurgical melting processes, Blast Furnace Linings for pig iron production, Specialty Graphite for various applications, including the chemical industry and Battery Anode Material. European production facilities are located in Poland (Racibórz and Nowy Sącz) and France (Vénissieux and Notre Dame de Briançon), with an additional sales office situated in Beijing, China.

History[edit]

Tokai COBEX GmbH, together with its subsidiary Tokai COBEX Polska, emerged from SGL Carbon in august 2017 as part of the carve-out of the Performance Products (PP) business unit. PP/ SGL CFLCE was sold to the private equity company Triton[2].

By May 2018, SGL CFL CE, operating under Triton Fund IV, completed its transformation into an independent entity named COBEX[3].

In June 2019, Triton finalized the sale of COBEX[4] to Tokai Carbon Co., Ltd., a leading figure in the Japanese carbon product industry, for a corporate value of 825 million euros[5]. Concurrently, the company underwent a rebranding, adopting the name Tokai COBEX[6]

In 2020, Tokai COBEX, in collaboration with Tokai Carbon, acquired Carbone Savoie[7] along with its facilities in Notre-Dame-de-Briançon and Vénissieux, France. The subsequent year saw a name and logo change to Tokai COBEX Savoie, with Tokai COBEX now holding 100% of the shares.
