"Tunnel Vision" is a song by American singer-songwriter Melanie Martinez. It is the third track from her[a] third studio album, Portals.[1] It was released as a single on March 17, 2023, through Atlantic Records.[2]

Background[edit]

This song was written in Hawaii in February of 2021 with Kinetics and One Love. Melanie described that experience as being surrounded by frogs, the sound of the rain hitting their roof, and pure connection. It serves as a metaphorical tunnel journey with familiar hymns, allowing a smooth transition to the other side while maintaining a relatable double meaning. Despite facing a Dropbox hack in the same year, Melanie decided to keep the track on the list, unable to surpass its 'tunnel vision' theme. She had previously explored this theme in earlier demos, including the short one titled 'Tunnel Vision.'

In March 2021, Melanie shared her Hawaiian experience on Instagram, hinting at the third album. In one of the slides, she was singing an unknown song, that was later revealed as Tunnel Vision. A snippet of the song was teased on Instagram on February 22nd, 2023. Confirmation of the song as the third track on PORTALS came on March 16th, 2023, with the lyrics revealed on March 21st, 2023, via Melanie's official website.

Responding to a TikTok comment on June 13th, 2023, Melanie disclosed her plan to commence shooting the music video in September 2023. On December 18th, 2023, she announced on Instagram that the music video would premiere the next day at 11:00 am PT/2:00 pm ET. A text from a 917 area code further promoted the video. The premiere took place on Melanie's YouTube channel on December 19th, 2023, sparking Twitter trends with "STREAM PORTALS," "MELANIE MARTINEZ IS COMING," and "MELANIE IS COMING" dominating the entertainment section.

Music video[edit]

The video commences with The Creature descending from the sky, likely post-"VOID", where she leaps from the building in the music video. Positioned within an immense structure teeming with vegetation, she encounters a radiant well at the heart of the ruin. Cry Baby approaches, plunging backward into the well, ushering her entry into a video game.

Within the digital realm, Cry Baby adopts a new attire and finds herself in a tunnel-like expanse. A hovering heart bears the inscription "Enter" (hints previously dispatched to fans via email as spoilers). Clicking the heart on the screen, Cry Baby navigates the digital world, pushing a substantial rock door impeding her path. Accompanied by four dancers, they commence dancing on a levitating platform.

Cry Baby undergoes visual transformations prompted by the floating hearts, they are given sharp teeth for a moment, ("Say they're demonic") as well as long braids ["Give them long hair"(Most likely a reference to Class Fight], long legs, ["Made them tall and skinny (Maybe a reference to Strawberry Shortcake?)] and increase their mouth, with dancers pulling it ("Made them smile all the time). Post-chorus, the platform secures itself to the ground, transforming the environment into a forest. Cry Baby ascends a hill, glancing back as the dancers pursue (Chase them for a photo). Utilizing her powers, Cry Baby propels the dancers downhill, prompting a square statement to stress her out ("You've made them very upset").

Retreating to a forest hideaway, Cry Baby creates a hole, and after her actions, a derogatory command insults her ("Call them a b*tch for being human"). Seated inside the hole, tears overflow, reminiscent of the Cry Baby music video. Draining the water (Drain water), Cry Baby emerges from the ground, evading a mallet in a game of Wack-a-Fairy.

Cry Baby and the dancers return to the floating platform with glowing eyes. The camera transitions up from the tunnel into a forest. The dancers are around Cry Baby with them in the center (Mad Hatter reference). Encircled by the dancers, Cry Baby, at the center, slowly descends into a hole, and a "GAME OVER" message appears. The camera exits the screen, unveiling Fan Girl as the game player. Frustrated by the loss, she slams her keyboard, causing her computer to catch fire. The video concludes with Fan Girl exiting her room due to the fire.
