Draft:Unitarian Christian Church of America

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Unitarian Christian Church of America (UCCA) was formed on 1 October 2016, and is currently an internet-based community of ordained and lay members. It exists to promote Unitarian Christianity, and is not affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association.

The Church's Platform There are currently three articles that define the mission of the UCCA and Ten Beliefs.[1] Article One: The UCCA is a welcoming church that offers a gathering space for modern Unitarian Christians. Article Two: The UCCA affirms the belief in the oneness of God and the revelation of Jesus. It rejects the Doctrine of the Trinity as contrary to scripture. Article Three: The UCCA outlines ten "starting point" beliefs, which are not to be confused with creed. They are affirmations of the following: 1. God's oneness, 2. Jesus' teachings and example, 3. Studying the Bible for instruction and encouragement, 4. Gathering as a community of faith, 5. Free Will, 6. The Individual's free agency regarding spiritual matters, 7. Welcoming all, while retaining a specifically Unitarian Christian identity, 8. The autonomy of members' fellowships, 9. The rejection of any teaching that degrades the goodness of God or humanity, including Original Sin, Eternal Punishment, Predestination, Justification, etc., and 10. The Rejection of traditional Christian creedal requirements for membership.[2]

The Church's Leadership and Clergy The current Senior Pastor and President of the UCCA is the Reverend Shannon Rogers, who heads the UCCA council. The Reverend Don Adams is a council advisor, and the Reverend Dr. Graham Louden is the Senior Advisor for UK and European Liaison. Mr. Tom Powell is Director for Laity and Lay Ministries.[3]

After completing a program of guided study, ordained ministers establish fellowships in their local areas or on-line. The UCCA follows the congregational model of leadership, so each fellowship operates independently of the others. Each fellowship is free to design its own form of worship, including the practice of rites, prayers, and the study of Christian scripture.

Publications The Reverend Doctor Shannon Rogers published An Introduction to the Unitarian Christian Church of America (UCCA) in 2023. It outlines the UCCA's platform.
