The untitled Iron Man video game is an upcoming action-adventure game developed by Motive Studio and published by Electronic Arts. Based on the Marvel Comics character Iron Man, it will feature an original narrative inspired by the long-running comic book mythology, while additionally deriving from various adaptations in other media.

EA and Marvel Games jointly announced a partnership to develop multiple titles based on Marvel Comics characters in September 2022, confirming the project as the first game to be produced under the deal. The game entered full development in January 2023 after Motive concluded production on the remake of Dead Space (2023).

Gameplay[edit]

The untitled Iron Man video game will be a third-person, open world action-adventure game.[1]

Development[edit]

In August 2022, video games journalist Jeff Grubb reported that Electronic Arts had begun development on a single-player, open world video game featuring the character Iron Man, following up on a report from earlier in the year that the publisher had also been in pre-production on a similar title starring Black Panther in collaboration with Marvel Games. Said report was later corroborated by games writer Tom Henderson, who claimed to have heard of a similar partnership between EA and Marvel, but never had "anything concrete to report on".[2]

The game, alongside the partnership between EA and Marvel Games, was officially announced in September 2022, confirming the title as entering the early stages of development at EA's internal Motive Studio team. The game was described by the publisher as telling an original narrative that "taps into the rich history of Iron Man, channeling the complexity, charisma, and creative genius of Tony Stark, and enabling players to feel what it’s like to truly play as Iron Man". The press release further confirmed that the collaboration between the two companies was long-term, with the Iron Man game stated as "being the first of several new games" based on Marvel Comics characters. The game's development is being led by executive producer Olivier Proulx, who had previously served as game director on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (2021) from Eidos-Montréal.[3] Proulx expressed excitement towards working on the project, describing Marvel's supervision over the project as allowing the developers to "have a lot of freedom", while exclaiming that they were encouraged to "create something fresh".[4][5][6] Also involved in the project is writer Ian Frazier, as well as producer JF Poirier and EA's Franchise Development Director Maëlenn Lumineau.[7]

The game officially entered active production in February 2023, following the release of Motive Studio's remake of Dead Space (2023).[8] In October 2023, Motive Studio General Manager Patrick Klaus provided a brief update on the game's status, stating that the developer had put a Community Council in place comprised of Marvel and Iron Man fans to provide feedback on the title's progress, and that production would transition back to being fully in-person at their main Montreal studio for the first time since the COVID-19 outbreak.[9] The game was also confirmed to be using Unreal Engine 5 as opposed to previous Motive titles being powered by EA's internal Frostbite engine.[10] Later that month, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and Fantastic Four writer Ryan North announced he had joined writing team on the game.[11]

By April 2024, Motive was announced to be acting as a support studio for the Battlefield franchise in addition to continuing work on the Iron Man game.[12] Ian Frazier was named as the game's creative director in addition to his duties as writer, and Patrick Klaus announced the game had hit an important "internal milestone" with regards to development progress.[13]
