The Sistema Metropolitano de Movilidad Amable y Sostenible Va-y-Ven (lit: Metropolitan System of Friendly and Sustainable Mobility Back-and-Forth) also known as Va y ven it's a public transportation system and urban mobility in the State of Yucatan, Mexico. It's managed and operated by the Yucatan state government, which offers services of transit bus in the cities of Merida, Valladolid, Tekax, Tizimin and Uman. It was inaugurated on November 27th, 2021 as a replace for the Integral System of Urban Transportation (SITUR, by its acronym in spanish), which was replaced in its entirety on January 3rd, 2023

Fares, payment systems and service hours

The payment system of the Va y Ven system is made by smart rechargable cards, which are recognized by the electronic readers on each bus. The general fare is 12 pesos, and the social fare for students and the eldery is 5 pesos, while for the disabled is free. The general fare card can be used to pay several users at the same time, while the social fare cards can be used only to pay one trip per person and once per unit. The general fare smart cards (the blue ones) can be bought on the fare vending machines of the system, which are nearby every bus stop on the Peripheral ring of Merida, in the Palacio de la Música in and the Merida Bus Terminal, both in downtown Merida. Each card costs 25 pesos

The social fare smart cards (yellow ones) are exclusive for students from the age of 6 years old, and for eldery people. These cards can be acquired in the Va y Ven headquarters located at Calle 39 and Avenida Reforma, by submitting the required documentation, which consists on a proof of adress and Voting credential for the eldery, students must attach a proof of studies and CURP if they are minors. Issuance of cards is free but must be renewed; in case of loss, replacement will cost 65 pesos. The validity of the social rate card for students may vary depending on the type of scholar system, the eldery people and elementary and middle school students can obtain their social fare card with one year of validity, while high school and university students can obtain it with 6 months of validity (if the school system is semester system) or 4 months (if the school system is quarter system); to check the exact expiration date, the card must be read by the reader located in the main hall of the offices, which will display the expiration date.

The social fare smart cards for the disabled (white ones) are exlusive for people with physical or mental disabilities, this cards are obtained in the same Va y Ven headquarters by submitting a proof of adress, Voting credential a certificate from the Yucatan's Center for Rehabilitation and Special Education in order to be able to obtain it. Issuance of this cards is also free but also must be renewed; in case of loss, replacement will cost 65 pesos as well. This one has a validity of one year. The fares in Va y Ven buses and vans of night routes can't be paid in cash, only smart card payment.

Cards balance can be checked and recharged in previously mencionated machines, as well as in the convinience stores OXXO ,Abarrotes Dunosusa, Super AKI, Willys and Farmacias YZA.

Routes operate from 5:00 am to 11:00 pm.The Va y Ven offices are open from Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. .

Social fare in city buses

The Va y Ven social fare smart card (yellow and white) can be used in buses that do not belong to the Va y Ven system to have access to the social fares established by the Institute of Mobility and Urban Territorial Development (IMDUT, by its acronym in spanish). When boarding the bus, the user must place the card in the reader of the bus (as if they were going to pay with the card) and wait for the reader to authorize the discount, this will happen when it turns on a blue light. The readers on these buses do not take any money from the card, so it must be paid in cash. In case the bus does not have a reader or it doesn't work, you must show the card to the driver or to the video surveillance camera (if the bus has a camera) to validate the fare.

In the city's buses that do not belong to the Va y Ven system, the general fare is 7.50 pesos, while the fare for the eldery and students is 2.50 pesos by showing their Va y Ven social fare smart card (yellow). On the other hand, the fare for disabled people is free of charge, as long as they show their respective card when boarding.The air-conditioned buses of some agencies (such as Climabús of Alianza de Camioneros de Yucatán, A.C.Y or buses from Rápidos de Mérida) will not accept the social fare.

The social fare for students is not valid on Sundays, holidays and during Easter, summer and December vacations in units not belonging to the system; therefore, when boarding the units, the social fare will not be available even if the card is shown.

The social fare is valid 365 days a year on the routes incorporated to the Va y Ven.

Vehicle fleet

The Va y Ven routes use high-end buses:

• Beccar Urviabus Low Entry Scania K250UB Euro 5 and Euro 6 (Peripheral Circuit)
• AYCO Metropolitan Scania K250UB Euro 6 (Airport Route and Peripheral Circuit, both operated by Mobility ADO)
• Busscar Urbanuss Pluss S Mercedes-Benz O500 U 1928 BlueTec 5 / OH 1621 SB (Metropolitan Ciruit and city routes), operated by Minis 2000, Urbanos de Mérida, Corporativo Sirus, Líneas Urbe, Minibuses del poniente and Mobility ADO (Circuito Rojo - Peripheral Express)
• Nissan Urvan and Toyota Hiace (Night routes) service provided by F.U.T.V. (Frente Unico de Trabajadores al Volante) units.

In the future for the renewal of more routes units such as Yutong Urban Diesel, Irizar Ie-Tram, Yutong Hybrids, Volvo Access, Yutong Electric Articulated, Kinglong electric minibus, Yutong Electric 12-meter and Mercedes-Benz have been chosen.

Routes and services

Airport route (Airport, hotels and congress center)

The Ruta Aeropuerto (Airport Route) connects different areas nearby downtown Merida with the Merida International Airport. The fare is $12 pesos for the social rate and $45 pesos for the general rate.

It can only be boarded at the established stops, which are:

• Centro Internacional de Congresos (international congress center)

The schedule for this route is daily from 5:00 am to 10:00 pm.

Night Routes

It's a service that has 14 night routes so that the population has public transportation service from Monday to Saturday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. and on Sundays until 1:00 a.m.

Instead of using buses, F.U.T.V. vans are used, with their main base at the Palacio de la Música in downtown Merida, which can be stopped and picked up at any corner as long as they are within the established route.

Information on the details of each route can be requested from the "Va y Ven" smartphone app, available on Android and iOS.

This has a cost of $15 pesos for the general fare and $5 pesos for the social fare and transfers with other routes are avilable.

Soon this service will operate with Kinglong electric minibuses.

Ie-Tram Yucatan

It'll be a 100% electric service that will connect Kanasín and Umán with Mérida and more than 137 neighborhoods.

Circuito Periferico

The Circuito Periferico (Peripheral Circuit) allows fast, time-and-money saving trips to different parts of the city's periphery without having to go through downtown Merida, connecting more than 120 nearby neighborhoods and their 104 transit routes.

Has a total of 40 stops and two ways to travel, outside peripheral ring (counterclockwise) and inside (clockwise).

These are the services that will gradually replace most of the common routes within the city of Mérida, connecting various neighborhoods with downtown Merida .All of them cost $12 pesos for the general fare and $5 pesos for the social fare, and have a daily schedule from 5:00 am to 10:00 pm. In addition, some of them have transfer stops with Night Routes, which means, their route connects with night routes.

Coming Routes

It is expected that throughout the year, several routes will be incorporated into the Va y Ven system to reach at least 80% of the population in order to promote the use of public transportation.

Circuito Rojo (Route 703)

Circuito Rojo (Red Circuit) was incorporated on November 4th, 2023, connecting east to south-west Merida.

This route can be considered a transversal circuit since it doesn't go through downtown, starting at the Dirección De Transporte and arriving at the Unidad Deportiva Pacabtún. It has connections and transfers with Night routes, Circuito Poniente, plazas y universidades, Circuito Periférico, Downtown - Umán and the Circuito Metropolitano.

It has 115 stops.

Its fare is $12 pesos for the general fare and $5 pesos for the social fare.

Circuito Metropolitano

This is the improvement of the Circuito Metropolitano (Metropolitan Circuit) that had been implemented previously since November 25, 2005 by the agency of the same name, later by SITUR and currently by the Va y Ven system. It has a service that runs from 5:00 to 20:00 hours from Monday to Sunday, with the Meliton Salazar park as its last stop and base. It has two ways to travel, clockwise and counterclockwise, both with the same last stop and base when service of the bus finishes.

It has 261 stops throughout the metropolitan area of Merida, covering 231 neighborhoods and housing complexes, and with a maximum distance of 500 meters between each one (250 meters walkable), so that transportation is faster and less time consuming, with a waiting time of 15 minutes between each unit.

The fare for this circuit is $12 pesos for general fare and for the first time it has a social fare, which is $5 pesos.

Circuito Poniente, Plazas y Universidades

The Circuito Poniente, Plazas y Universidades (Western, Malls and Universities Circuit) has recently been incorporated into the Va y Ven system, thus ending the division between "Circuito Poniente y Plazas" (which ended mid-route) and "Circuito Poniente, Plazas y Universidades" formerly of SITUR, which will now form a single route (Circuito Poniente, Plazas y Universidades) that starts at the Dirección de Transporte and reaches the University Campus of the UADY, covering 160 neighborhoods along its route and connecting 90 public transit routes.

Has 30 buses with a waiting time of 6 minutes between each one, working from Monday to Sunday from 5:00 to 22:00 hours. It also has selected stops and transfers with night routes, Metropolitan Circuit and Peripheral Circuit.

It costs $12 pesos for general fare and $5 pesos for social fare.
