Vietnamese Green Papaya Salad, locally known as "Gỏi đu đủ xanh", is popular in street food stalls, in a daily meal or family gatherings across Vietnam. It's a bit different from Thai Green Papaya Salad in the ingredients and the method to mix the ingredients together. in Vietnamese version, Green Papaya Salad includes shredded green papaya, carrot, proteins (chicken, pork or shrimp), herbs like cilantro, Thai basil, dressed by fish sauce mix and topped with roasted peanut.

Preparation[edit]

The main ingredient in Vietnamese green papaya salad is green papaya and carrots. They are peeled and then julienned or shredded into thin strips. The salad is typically balanced with a mixture of sweet, sour, salty, and umami flavors. Common ingredients[1] added to the salad include:

  • Fresh herbs: Cilantro, and Thai basil are often used to add fragrance and depth to the dish.
  • Roasted Peanuts: These add a nutty crunch and texture to the salad.
  • Chilies: Sliced or chopped chilies are used to provide a spicy kick.
  • Lime juice: Fresh lime juice contributes the sour element to balance the flavors.
  • Fish sauce: This is a staple ingredient in Vietnamese cuisine and provides the salty and umami flavors.
  • Crushed garlic: Add aromatic to the fish sauce.

Mixing Method[2][edit]

All the ingredients of the salad are mixed by hand, instead of crushing in a mortar like Thai papaya salad.

Variations[edit]

As with many traditional dishes, there are regional and personal variations of Vietnamese green papaya salad. Some versions might include additional ingredients like shrimp, pork, or other vegetables to enhance the dish's texture and flavor profile.
