Zelda Trixie Lulamoon (born October 21, 1998[1]) is an American musician and songwriter who performs under the alias Vylet Pony.[2] Lulamoon is most well known for her work in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic-themed music.[4]
Early life (1998–2012)[edit]
Lulamoon was born in Daly City on October 21, 1998.[1] She is multiracial and describes her ethnic background as "half Filipino and Chinese. The other half is like Scottish and Italian or something."[5]
Lulamoon began creating music in 2006, using "a laptop set up with a Korg M1 keyboard & Garageband."[3] A teacher at Lulamoon's middle school introduced her to electronic music in 2012[3] and she joined the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fandom in June of that year.[6]
Work as Vylet Pony (2012–present)[edit]
Lulamoon made "No Matter What," her first My Little Pony-themed song, in 2012.[3] Even as the My Little Pony fandom declined in the mid-late 2010s,[7] Lulamoon's profile grew, with her albums CUTIEMARKS and can opener's notebook: fish whisperer attracting public and critical attention.[8] Lulamoon's work received substantial attention when YouTuber Anthony Fantano played her song "i’ve still got something to teach you" on his The Needle Drop stream in February 2022.[9]
Musical style[edit]
Music critics have described Lulamoon's output as fitting in several genres. The Fandomentals' J. Darr said that Lulamoon's work as Vylet Pony "leaps effortlessly between branches of EDM with various forays into synthpop, alternative metal, R&B, and a laundry list of other genres."[3] Writing for Willamette Week, journalist Daniel Bromfield observed that "a single song" by Lulamoon "might toggle between dubstep, orchestral pop, punk rock, and ambient music in just a few minutes."[2] Writing for Ringtone, Amelia Zollner described Lulamoon's can opener's notebook as "Drawing upon everything from hyperpop to prog and influences like Porter Robinson and underscores."[10]
Reception[edit]
Critical reception to Lulamoon's work as Vylet Pony has generally been favorable. Darr highlighted the passion and originality of Lulamoon's work and praised CUTIEMARKS as "a triumphant affirmation of queer survival in the face of threats both internal and external."[3] Zollner praised the unique concept of can opener's notebook and asserted, "Trust me, you’re going to want to give this album a shot."[10]
Personal life[edit]
Lulamoon moved to Portland, Oregon in 2019, where she currently lives.[2] She identifies as transgender, lesbian, and neurodivergent.[2] Lulamoon is married to Eden Laing; the couple celebrates their anniversary on July 11.[11]
