Wangulei, or Wanglei, is a payam located in Twic East, Jonglei State, South Sudan. Its a court centre of Nyuak section of Twic East Dinka and the payam headquarters of Nyuak Payam in Twic East County located in the center of the county and a few kilometers away from the county's headquarters in Panyagor. From the data obtained at the end of 2008, Nyuak is the biggest payam in Twic East County, with 7 Bomas.[1]

History[edit]

Wangulei is calimed by the three of the sub-sections that make up of the Nyuak Section, i.e., Dacuek, Ayual, and Awulian. Historically[according to whom?] Ajak Kur Ayuel was the first man to inhabit the Wangulei area and he is said to be a forefather of the Ayual Clan.[citation needed]

Population[edit]

The population of Wangulei was estimated at about 21,121 in 2008.[1][2] The current population is not publicly known, as of July 2016.[3]

Climatic change[edit]

Wangulei is situated in the Eastern part of South Sudan. It is one of the payam headquarters in South Sudan which is hindered by climate change during rainy season. it's affected by too much water which sometimes leads to flood in some parts of the county. The effects of climate change in South Sudan have led to unusually intense rains: flood waters have forced people from their homes, leaving them without sufficient food and water, says Caroline Sekyewa, International Rescue Committee's country director in South Sudan, on April 10, 2023.[4]

Wangulei Payam is composed of three Sections: Dacuek, Ayual , and Awulian. Bol Manyok Duot is the leading paramount chief of Nyuak payam.[citation needed]

Notable people[edit]

  • John Garang (June 23, 1945 – July 30, 2005)[5] was a Sudanese politician and revolutionary leader. From 1983 to 2005, he led the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) during the Second Sudanese Civil War. He briefly served as First Vice President of Sudan for three weeks, from the comprehensive peace agreement of 2005 until his death in a helicopter crash on July 30, 2005. A developmental economist by profession, Garang was a major influence in the movement that led to the foundation of South Sudan.
  • Lual Achuek Lual Deng was born in Baping village, Twic East County in Jonglei state. He holds two degrees from the American universities: an M.A in economics from Iowa State University and PhD in Economics from University of Wisconsin. Deng after completing his PhD, he joined the World Bank, then the African Development Bank. Deng became a state minister for finance in the Government of National Unity (GONU), Khartoum. After the National elections in April 2010, he was appointed a federal minster for petroleum in GONU, the first southerner in the history of Sudan to take that post.[6]
  • Dau Akoi Jurkuch, who is the former Commissioner of Twic Centre County of Jonglei State.[7] Jurkuch joined the SPLA as a young man in 1983. He was commissioned as a security officer before he was moved to be personal secretary of William Nyuon Bany the former SPLA chief of General Staff and deputy by then.[8]
