WiFi Map is a connectivity app offering a database of millions of free public Wi-Fi hotspots, eSIM data and VPN connections. It is based on a crowdsourcing model, allowing users to add hotspots to a shared global map. The app, which is available via the App Store and Google Play, has been downloaded over 160 million times.

History[edit]

WiFi Map was founded in 2014 by entrepreneurs Denis Sklyarov and Igor Goldenberg. The idea behind the platform came from their personal experiences of traveling, as they often struggled to find reliable and accessible Wi-Fi connections.

They created WiFi Map as a way to bring useful hotspots together in one comprehensive Wi-Fi database. Users are encouraged to contribute information about Wi-Fi networks in their vicinity, such as passwords, signal strength, and location details.

Additional features have been added over the years based on new technologies and user feedback, including user reviews, internet speed tests, and the ability to filter Wi-Fi networks based on criteria such as password protection and location.

Functionality[edit]

WiFi Map is available as a mobile application for both iOS[1] and Android devices[2]. Users can also access the service through its official website.

The platform operates on a freemium model, where basic features are available for free, while additional functionalities require a subscription.

Upon opening the WiFi Map app, users are presented with a map interface that displays Wi-Fi hotspots in their vicinity. Each hotspot is represented by a marker, indicating its location, connection speed and health, which indicates how recently other users have logged into the hotspot and checked its credentials. Users can select a hotspot to view details such as the network name and password (if applicable).

Notable premium features of the app include its offline functionality, which allows users to download city maps to their devices. The platform also offers VPN protection, both in the premium version and as an ad-supported service. eSIM mobile data plans are also available and are valid in 70 countries.

The $WIFI token[edit]

In 2023, WiFi Map launched the $WIFI utility token. Following a private sale, the initial token launch was done through the TrustSwap Launchpad on 30 March. The TGE then took place on 7 April, and the token was listed on several major exchanges.

At present, $WIFI can be traded on a number of major platforms including OKX, Huobi, Poloniex and Gate.io. OKX offers both a centralized option for trading on the main exchange and decentralized trading with the OKX DEX wallet.

Gate.io is a fully decentralized exchange. All trading takes place under the WIFI/USDT trading pair.

The token is used to facilitate the app’s ‘connect to earn’ model, whereby users are rewarded in $WIFI via monthly airdrops for adding new hotspots, verifying network information, and running internet speed tests.

It can then be redeemed for eSIM mobile data using the in-app $WIFI wallet, with users receiving 15% of the value of each data plan in $WIFI cashback.

Community and security[edit]

The platform encourages users to add new hotspots, update existing ones, and verify the accuracy of information in the app. WiFi Map employs encryption protocols to protect sensitive information.

The platform also allows users to report suspicious or inappropriate content. Furthermore, the reviews and ratings help others gauge the quality and reliability of a Wi-Fi network before connecting to it.
