Turrell School District

The William R. Golden School was a school for African American students in Turrell, Arkansas. The school was named for William R. Golden who was principal of Turrell’s grade school for African Americans and oversaw its growth including the addition of a high school program.[1]

It was preceded by the short-lived Crittenden County Industrial School.[2]

In 1969 it served grades 1-12 had 543 students and 24 educators. All of the instructors were documented as “Negro”.[3]

William R. Golden High School served grades 7-12.[4] It had a library.[5] J. Franklin Dawson served as principal.[4]

Turrell public school colors were black and white, and Rockets were the mascot. Before 1936 the schools' colors were black and orange and the mascot was a Bulldog.[6] In 2010 the Turrell School District was merged with the Marion School District.[7]
