Winnie Winani Mpala (born August 10, 1970, in Maun) is a Botswanan writer of novels, short fiction, and poetry.
Biography[edit]
Winnie Winani Mpala was born to Doreen Batho Olepeng and Tharcisius Mtshumayeli Mpala, a retired teacher. Her educational journey commenced at Botswelelo Primary School in 1977, followed by Maun Senior Secondary School from 1984 to 1986. She pursued her Cambridge certificate at Materspei College in 1987-1988 and, despite facing teenage pregnancy in 1988, appearing as a private candidate for her examinations in 1989.
Undertaking her Tirelo Setshaba at Donga CJSS from 1991 to 1992, Mpala later became a temporary English Language teacher at Donga in 1992. She underwent teacher training at Tonota College of Education from 1993 to 1995. She went on to at Patikwane CJSS (1996-1999) and Ranokanyane CJSS (2000-June 2011) before relocating to Nata Senior Secondary School, where she currently works.
Mpala pursued a certificate in Library Studies at the University of Botswana (2002-2003) and later a Bachelor of Education in English Language and Literature in English at the same institution in 2007.
Writing career[edit]
Mpala often draws inspiration from her life, as evident in her 2022 novel, Lea’s Secret. Mpala was raped at age 11, and wrote the book both as a way to work through her trauma and to bring attention to the subject.[1]
Her poetic contributions to the "Writing Woman Anthology," featured in Volume 3 (2023), delve into autobiographical themes, reflecting her personal experiences of extreme emotional abuse.
In 2024, Mpala is set to release an anthology of poems titled "Silent Echoes" and a series of preteen books focusing on character development, with the first anthology entitled "Tween Tales: Mystery of
Mpala is the founder and editor-in-chief of "Colourful Chronicles," an online lifestyle magazine launched in 2023.
