English: Baron Aberdare (1874) capsized at the entrance to Royal Albert Dock, London A copy negative of the three-masted ship Baron Aberdare (1874) capsized in Royal Victoria Dock at the entrance to Royal Albert Dock, London. The photograph has been taken from the near the stern of the ship and looks forward across the semi-exposed decks. Four men are standing on the exposed port side of the ship, while others are in boatrs alogside the mizzen mast. The ship broke free from Jetty I during a gale on the night of 11 and 12 December 1883 and was blown eastward towards the entrance with Royal Albert Dock. Her rigging caught three hydraulic cranes which caused her to capsize and damage the jetty. She was in ballast at the time having discharged a Calcutta cargo. |
