Description
English: Burning of the Inman Line Steamship City of Montreal on her voyage from New York to Liverpool, Aug 10 1887
Hand-coloured lithograph print depicting the Inman Line steamship City of Montreal on fire on the night of August 10, 1887, her passengers and crew escaping in 8 lifeboats. The ship had left New York on August 6, with about 90 crew and 135 passengers, and it is unclear from records, but there seem to have been no immediate casualties. The lifeboats (except one) were picked up by the German vessel Trabant that same night. The next morning they were transferred onto the Furness Line steamer York City, which brought them to London.
