Title
Early medieval: Iron Spear
Description
English: An iron spearhead of Early Anglo-Saxon date. Kevin Leahy comments: "With its open socket and an angled blade which is disproportionally longer than the socket this spear fits into Swanton (1973) Group E1. Swanton feels this Group is early and didn't find any that could be dated as late as the sixth century. I would be more cautious and say fifth-early sixth century."

The spear, which is now in poor condition, measures 210mm long and 46mm wide. In cross section the socket has two almost straight sides, the others being rounded. The spear is bent slightly form the base of the blade. The internal length of the socket is 19.28mm.
