Sculpture by Lisa Hoke, Equilibrium (steel, cast iron and wire, dimensions variable, 1990). The image illustrates an early stage and body of work in Lisa Hoke's art when she produced spare, near-monochrome, early constructions in cast iron, steel and wire, which explored traditional sculptural issues involving balance, gravity, aerodynamics, mass and space, while also engaging two-dimensional drawing issues. In this work, she created a ceiling-bound, tangled cloud of wire that was hoisted by a hand-shaped counterweight across the room. This project and similar works have been publicly exhibited in prominent venues, discussed in major art journals and daily press publications, and commissioned by museums. |
