Description

Artwork by Lisa Hoke, Light My Fire (site-specific installation, paper and glue, 40' × 20', 2006, Rice University Moody Arts Center, Houston, TX). The image illustrates a mid-career stage and body of work in Lisa Hoke's art when she produced abstract installations of hanging forms, mosaic-like panels, and sculptural murals, using consumer detritus and commercial packaging as raw materials. In this work, she explored color chromatics and surface sensations using short, variously cropped red, pink, yellow and white paper scrolls adhered to five adjacent windows. It exploited shifting sunlight to create a lace-like effect dappling the space with spots of light and color that changed and faded in intensity over time. This project and similar works have been publicly exhibited in prominent venues, discussed in major art journals and daily press publications, and commissioned by museums.

Purpose of use

The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a mid-career stage and body of work by Lisa Hoke, which was initiated in the late 1990s: her abstract installations of hanging forms, mosaic-like panels, and sculptural murals, using consumer detritus and commercial packaging as raw materials. These included gallery installations of kite-like polyester sheets embedded with multi-colored neon drinking straws and window works that explored color chromatics and surface sensations, using colored paper and beverage cups as their raw materials. Because the article is about an artist and her work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize this key developmental phase of her career, which brought widespread recognition through exhibitions in major venues, coverage by major critics in publications, and museum commissions. Hoke's work of this type and this work in particular is discussed in the article and by prominent critics cited in the article.

Replaceable?

There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Lisa Hoke, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image.

Other information

The image will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original due to its low resolution and the general workings of the art market, which values the actual work of art. Because of the low resolution, illegal copies could not be made.
