Mexico[edit]

Some parts of Mexico have the same age of consent than the rest of South America, and some other have the same one than the rest of North America. Map needs to be fixed.

As far, as I know, the legal age of consent for sexual activity is 18 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.143.207.226 (talk) 17:33, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Germany[edit]

The map is misleading and plain wrong for tha vast majority of the european countries. To be explicit: consensual sex is legal in germany at the age of 15 if approved by the parents and at the age of 16 without parental approval. People become "of age" at the age of 18, meaning that they're given the full rights in elections and the permission to apply for driver's licenses. Up to the age of 24 it is possible to apply special legal protection for offenders if experts in a legal trial testify that the offender is not capable of judging the impact of his deeds for immaturity reasons. Consensual sex is NOT permitted at the age of 13 in germany, as the map suggests. I strongly advocate the removal of this highly misleading map.

You're right, it is misleading. The law in Germany is that the age of consent is 16, so long as the partner is no more than two years younger. This means that at least one person must be 16 to be within the law, so two 14-year-olds would not be of consensual age, unlike what this map suggests. 86.130.167.27 (talk) 09:56, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wrong. According to StgB article 176 and 182, the age of consent is 14 in Germany. If someone holds authority over the minor, age of consent rises to 18. If the perpetrator is 21 or older, and doesn’t exploit the minor, it’s legal to engage in relationship. 5.177.141.28 (talk) 16:43, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Northern Ireland[edit]

Although England, Scotland and Wales all have the age of consent set at 16, Northern Ireland retains the age of consent at 18. Therefore the map is incorrect.

Not sure, but I think it is 17.

Yes - the age of consent is 17 in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland (as stated in the ages of consent in Europe article). The map is wrong. 217.155.20.163 21:11, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Legal age in Northern ireland is 17, http://www.ruthinking.co.uk/the-facts/search/articles/sex-and-the-law.aspx

"The law says it's legal for you to consent to have sex from the age of 16. In Northern Ireland, you have to be 17. Gay sex is legal if you're both 16 or over in England, Wales and Scotland. In Northern Ireland it's 17. And 18 in Jersey. The law also says you must have sex in private. As long as girls are over 16 and both agree to it, lesbian sex is legal" Weeman com (talk) 23:14, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Correction Jersey's age of consent for gay males is 16 - inline with heterosexuals under the Criminal Code (Sodomy Age Equalization) Act 2007. It is also 16 for Isle Of Man since 2006 under the Crimal Code Amendment (Equal Sexual Offences) Act 2006 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.148.207.230 (talk) 14:38, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Canada[edit]

Needs to be fixed - I'll try to do this. WilyD 15:36, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The age of consent for Canada is 14, not 16. The government has introduced legislation to change it to 16. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Martina17 (talkcontribs).

the previous version did show Canada as 14, but it was changed to 16, on 22 July --Astrokey44 11:30, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Canada is set to 16 again, did the law change or just the picture? Chillum 14:36, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Greenland[edit]

Um, you can colour Greenland in the same colour as Denmark. The former is a territory of the latter. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 203.173.11.51 (talkcontribs).

greenland has been fixed --Astrokey44 11:27, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request for change[edit]

Four countries are currently marked purple for "must be married". I am requesting that these countries be color-coded by the age requirement for marriage, and then they can have a symbol appended (such as a star in the middle) to indicate "must be married". I am assuming that there is an age requirement for marriage in these countries (i.e. a five-year-old cannot be married). I will make this change if someone knows the requirements for marriage in these four countries. Thanks. — Reinyday, 16:48, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

WA, USA[edit]

It's 16 in Washington State, even if the other is arbitrarily old. The reason the web-sites say "16/18" is that there are certain circumstances when it's 18 (teachers, etc.). I suspect other states may be similarly misrepresented. —Ashley Y 05:56, 1 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I too live in Washington, and I heard the law is 16 unless there's a 18 or more month in age, then it's 18, but I dunno where I heard it. Sonic3KMaster(talk) 22:02, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Can you find a citation? I'd like to be sure before I change it. — Reinyday, 06:59, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
RCW 9A.44, but you have to pick through it. It's 16 generally (9A.44.079, 9A.44.089), but 18 in the special case of "abuses a supervisory position" (9A.44.093, 9A.44.096). —Ashley Y 08:59, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I believe that Texas is 14, not 17.

Color coding[edit]

Does anyone else find it very difficult to distinguish the five different shades of blue from each other? LeaHazel : talk : contribs 12:17, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I found the shades of blue very misleading and was lead to believe that certain European countries had been shown as having consenting ages that were younger than in actuality. I propose amendments to the map for this (as well as the others on this page). I do not have means to make these alterations myself. SKC 00:17, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I agree, though the hardest part was all the yellows. Although the blues would be more problematic, since their range starts with 9. The yellows need fixing, but the blues need fixing first.
  • Well, there are 12 different designations. So what are your suggestions for the different colors? I can change it if you have a suggestion as to how... — Reinyday, 06:58, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Yep I agree with you i find the different colours hard the 2 dark blues look the same as with the yellows. Id suggest using deep red for 20 ligher red for 19 and orange for 18. 17 and 16 been shades of yellow. Then 15 green then 14 and 13 shades of lighter blue, with something between dark and light blue for 12 and even darker again for 9. Or to make it even easier maybe pink or purple for 9 and dark blue for 12. Wonx2150 (talk) 02:46, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am finding this hard. I recommend using a combination of colour and pattern style shading. Also increase the legend size. 124.254.78.121 (talk) 01:49, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Updates[edit]

As of 07:10, 21 November 2006 (UTC), this page says:

First, the evidence for Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Paraguay, Bolivia and all other countries comes from A table of worldwide ages of consent, including US states and Legal Age of Consent.

Second, is Canada 14 or 16 now?

Third, the first above source cites 21 for Madagascar. Could you please find a citation for age 14?

I am happy to update this map if provided with the evidence to do so. Until then, I'm removing these notices. Thanks! — Reinyday, 07:10, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

  • Canada is 14. There's been talk of legislation to up it to sixteen, but don't hold your breath. There are some usual cavaets. WilyD 14:00, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Even as you wrote that, sodomy and exceptional anti-exploitation laws (expanded by BC2) made it 18 in a lot of cases. Tyciol (talk) 00:26, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Madagascar: see Ages of consent in Africa for source. Hawklord 20:48, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • My French is pretty poor, but it seems to me to say you have to be 21 or emancipated by marriage. Specifically, it refers to being less than 21, but more than 14, but not emancipated by marriage: "...la personne d'un mineur de vingt et un ans, même âgé de plus de 14 ans, mais non émancipé par le mariage." — Reinyday, 01:21, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
      • You are quoting the special case where a relative (ascendant) is culpable: "Sera puni de la peine portée à l’alinéa 1 l’attentat à la pudeur commis par tout ascendant sur la personne d’un mineur de moins de 21 ans, même âgé de plus de 14 ans, mais non émancipé par le mariage.". The first paragraph states the normal case, 14 years. Explanation in English. Hawklord 10:47, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is WAY incorrect for Mexico. Each state has its own limit, and some (like Baja California) are as low as 12. -Unsigned

Iceland is 15[edit]

Despite what Greg House says, Iceland is now at 15, not 14 and is the wrong colour. --81.105.243.17 (talk) 17:22, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Japan[edit]

While Japan, does have a minimum age of consent, over the whole country, the different prefectures have different ages. Mostly above the minimum. So if the US has different colours, for each state, so should Japan have for each prefecture. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.225.29.225 (talk) 11:56, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

update aoc for canada[edit]

Other forms of sex[edit]

Should the map include data on the ages of consent of other forms of sex, such as anal? Example: in Canada, age of consent for anal sex is 18, not 16. Cavenbame parlez 06:42, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't it all come under the one heading? 124.254.78.121 (talk) 01:52, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yemen[edit]

What's up with Yemen. In the image, it looks like the age of consent is 9 (!!) but the text on Ages of consent in Asia says something different:

Item number 15 in Yemeni civil law reads that “no girl or boy can get married before the age of 15." However, this item was amended in 1998 so parents could make a contract of marriage between their children even if they are under the age of 15. But the husband cannot be intimate with her until she is ready or mature.[2]

What's up? —mako 03:02, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Philippines[edit]

The relevant wiki article says that the age of consent in the Philippines is 18, which doesn't seem to be represented properly in the color coded map.--64.151.154.163 (talk) 01:21, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

UK[edit]

The age of consent in England, Scotland and Wales is 16.

It's 14 years now. Please correct. Passports also given at 14.--MathFacts (talk) 14:09, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Peru[edit]

Color Blind Friendly[edit]

I am red-green color blind and find it a bit difficult to match the varying shades of color to the key. Maybe someone could come up with a color scheme or use cross hatching to differentiate the colors better. Thaddeusw (talk) 22:43, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

China[edit]

The age of consent in China is way higher than 13, I think it might be 18. It's all part of the One Child Policy, the minimum age that you can have sex is high and the minimum age you can get married is 21. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.104.121.123 (talk) 02:10, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bulgaria[edit]
