Heungnyemun (Korean: 흥례문; Hanja: 興禮門) is second gate of Gyeongbok Palace, in Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea. It was torn down in the 20th century, but was restored along with Gwanghwamun as part of the restoration project from 2001 to 2021.[1]
History[edit]
During the Joseon Dynasty, gatekeepers worked alternately for two hours at the gate. During the Japanese colonial era of the 20th century, Japan demolished Heungnyemun and built a building for the Japanese Government-General of Korea on its spot. However, Heungnyemun was rebuilt on the same spot after independence in 1945.[2]
