Jake Dan-Azumi is a Nigerian Professor of Political Science and Development Studies who is the current Chief of Staff to the Speaker of the House of Representatives (Nigeria).[1][2] His prior roles include serving as a Special Assistant to the former President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator David Mark, and contributing as a Senior Research Fellow at the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies.[3]

Personal life[edit]

Jake Dan-Azumi was born in Damaturu, Yobe state, northeast Nigeria. He belongs to the Mumuye ethnic group in Taraba state. His upbringing involved frequent relocations around the northeastern part of Nigeria due to his father, Joseph Dan-Azumi, working for the Federal Bureau of Statistics and being transferred to different states.

Education[edit]

Dan-Azumi earned B.A. degrees from the University of Zimbabwe and the University of South Africa. He holds a doctorate in Development Planning & Administration from University College London. Additionally, he possesses a Postgraduate Diploma from the University of Bradford. Dan-Azumi currently serves as a visiting senior lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of Abuja.

Professional career[edit]

Dan-Azumi was the head of the International Cooperation Division at the National Institute for Legislative & Democratic Studies in the Nigeria National Assembly.[4] He has also been a faculty member of Loyola Jesuit College. Previously, he served as a Special Assistant to the President of the Nigerian Senate from 2011 to 2013. Dan-Azumi has worked as a governance consultant with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), where he contributed as an officer for the UNDP/DGD Project on Strengthening Key Processes and Committees of the Nigerian National Assembly. He held the position of Assistant Coordinator of the NILDS-University of Benin Postgraduate Programme. Furthermore, he has experience working with the Jesuit Refugee Service in Zambia.[5]

In October 2023, Dan-Azumi was appointed as a Chief of Staff to the speaker of the House of Representatives (Nigeria) by the Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.[6][7] He oversees all administrative and operational aspects of the Speaker's office, playing a crucial role in the efficient functioning of the legislative body.
