Jan Rotmans (born March 29, 1961) is a Dutch scientist and academic known for his research and contributions to the field of climate change, sustainability and transition management.

Early life and education[edit]

Rotmans was born on March 29, 1961, in Rotterdam, Netherlands.[1] After studying applied mathematics at TU Delft, he started his PhD research at the RIVM in 1986, and obtained his PhD in 1990.[2][3][4] In 1992, Rotmans became the youngest professor in the Netherlands, at the University of Maastricht.[5][6] From 1995 to 1997 he worked at the United Nations in New York.[7]

Career[edit]

Rotmans developed the IMAGE (Integrated Model to Assess the Greenhouse Effect) framework in 1980, an Integrated Assessment Model (IAM), to study environmental effects of human activity.[8] Rotmans is one of the founders of the transition Management model and the Integrated Assessment model.[9][10][11][12] He developed the global transition model TARGETS, which expanded on the Club of Rome's world model.

At Maastricht University in 1997, he opened the institute, ICIS (International Center for Integrative Studies). ICIS was later renamed the Maastricht Sustainability Institute (MSI).[13][14]

In 2004, he founded the transition research institute DRIFT (Dutch Research Institute For Transitions) and became professor of Transitions and Sustainability at Erasmus University Rotterdam .[15][16][17][18][19][20]

In 2007, he established the Urgenda Foundation with activist Marjan Minnesma, an organization for innovation and sustainability.[21][22] He is also the founder and director of the Dutch Knowledge Network on System Innovations and Transitions (KSI).[23]

Rotmans started two scientific journals ("Environmental Modeling" and "Assessment and Integrated Assessment"). He has published 27 books on sustainability and transitions and has authored about 300 scientific articles in the field of sustainability, environment, transition management and system innovations.[24][25][26][27][28] In 2012, he published his book "In het oog van de orkaan".[29] Rotmans recent book "Omarm de chaos" was published in 2021.[30][31][32][33]

He advises national and international governments, and organizations such as the European Commission, United Nations, World Bank, OECD, and the European Environment Agency. Rotmans develops strategies and policies to address challenges posed by climate change and sustainability.
