MailHippo

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MailHippo is a HIPAA compliant encrypted messaging platform designed to help people securely send and receive sensitive information and attachments by email. Founded and trademarked in 2015[1] by software engineer Chris Almond, who led a team of developers intent on creating a user-friendly system of email encryption. According to Atlantic.net – "MailHippo provides an easy and affordable HIPAA-compliant email solution".[2][unreliable source?]

History[edit]

The MailHippo platform was launched in February 2019 after four years of design, development & testing.[3] Founder Chris Almond and his team, who had previously developed and released a HIPAA-compliant therapy practice management software system, saw the need for a simple, low-cost email encryption platform with safeguards robust enough to meet the stringent HIPAA Security Rule.[3] MailHippo has completed Compliancy Group's Implementation Program, adhering to the necessary regulatory standards outlined in the HIPAA and HITECH.[4] Compliancy Group has verified MailHippo's good faith effort to maintain HIPAA compliance through its proprietary HIPAA solution, The Guard.[4]

Software[edit]

MailHippo works with a user's current email address, and with any email provider.[5] All communications with the MailHippo web portal employ SSL TLS 1.2 or higher level encryption, and all records are stored encrypted on the MailHippo platform. The user's email message body and all attachments are encrypted using AES 256.[6] Then MailHippo encrypts the key ring that stores the keys necessary to decrypt these records, so all email messages are encrypted both in transit and at rest.[6] The company doesn't rent outside server hosting, but rather owns, operates, and maintains its own servers, which are housed in two state-of-the-art data centers with both high availability and disaster protection.[7] These centers are locked down with biometrics, card key access, 24/7 monitoring, and other security measures.[8]
