Pleasant Grove is an unincorporated community in Wood County, located in the U.S. state of Texas.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, Pleasant Grove had a population of 30 in 2000.

History[edit]

The area in what is known as Pleasant Grove today was first settled sometime before 1870. The Pleasant Grove community itself was founded when Henry Robinson built a blacksmith shop in the area two years later and was named for a large stand of oak trees. The first church was built in 1874 and a store opened in 1887. A post office was established at Pleasant Grove in 1892 and remained in operation until 1907. One hundred people were living in the community in 1892 and were served by three churches and eight businesses, which included a general store, a blacksmith, a tannery, and grist and syrup mills. In the early 1930s, a fire demolished most of the community's businesses, and had only one business, several scattered houses, and 82 settlers in 1936. There was no population recorded in 1947, but the community had a church and some scattered houses in 1960. Some new houses were built in 1980, but the church closed in 1988. The population was 30 in 2000.[2]

Geography[edit]

Pleasant Grove is located on Farm to Market Road 515, 6.5 mi (10.5 km) west of Winnsboro in northern Wood County.[2]

Education[edit]

Pleasant Grove had a school in 1874. It had 177 White students and four teachers in 1896. A two-story structure was built in 1904 and had more than 200 White students enrolled and four teachers that next year. Three years later, the community had a college. Another one-story school building was established in 1926 on the same campus where the old school was built. The school continued to operate in 1936.[2] Today, the community is served by the Winnsboro Independent School District.
