Portal:Association football has been designed to need very little maintenance, however the following tasks need to be done at least once a year.

Update tournaments

The tournament lists as shown on the front page of the portal are transcluded from Portal:Association football/Current Tournaments. The portal uses the {{CURRENTYEAR}} function to only show the elements relating to 2024.

As the year progresses new tournaments are announced and some are cancelled, you can update this list by checking that the current listing is correct (and amending any that now have a more relevant article target) or by checking through the category relating to the year you are updating (e.g. for 2009, check Category:2009 in football (soccer)).

There are two different elements for each year, those for international team competitions (e.g. the World Cup) and those for international club competitions (e.g. the UEFA champions league). Please make sure you update the correct element.

Update requested articles

Portal:Association football/Contribute/Requested articles needs to be weeded out every now and then to remove created pages and have new requests entered. As this uses a template to randomly chose a line from the template code, you may have to check each entry individually. You can fill in any gaps by choosing some requested articles from Wikipedia:Requested articles/sports#Association football (soccer)

Add new pictures

You can search the internet for new selected pictures if you wish, please make sure they have been released under a free licence and upload them to commons. There are a variety of tools available to help you in this including Bryan's tool for flickr, this allows you to search for new CC licensed football/soccer images.

Update project listings

Portal:Association football/Projects/List is shown on this and other football related portals to point readers at the available WP:FOOTY related sub-projects and taskforces. It should contain all those workgroups on Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Task forces and sub-projects that are active. It should also agree with Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory/Culture/Sports#Football (soccer)
