Sunset over the Berkeley Hills, taken near Mount Diablo in Contra Costa County

I postulate this photograph was taken around sunset, which would place it facing roughly west.

  1. The photograph is credited (in the Exif) to Sergey Semenov via the now-discontinued panoramio.
  2. The timestamp in the EXIF is 1949 on 24 Jan 2015
  3. The sun would already have set by 1949 in January in the Bay Area. However, it is possible the internal clock on the camera was set in a different time zone.
  4. There is a Sergey Semenov in the Department of Chemistry at Harvard. That could make his home clock Eastern time, so local (Pacific) time could be 1649. This is approximately the right time for sunset in the Bay Area.
  5. The location of this photo is geotagged to near Mount Diablo. The strong angled light would only be present if the camera was facing west, towards the Berkeley Hills.
