  • May 4–6
A significant tornado outbreak affected the southern Great Plains and the southeastern United States. On May 6, a mile-wide EF3 tornado struck Lockett, Texas and a similarly large EF2 tornado hit Seminole, Oklahoma. Two more EF2 tornado struck near Almyra, Arkansas and in Rusk County, Texas the next day. Weak tornadoes touched down in the Southeast on May 6. Four weak tornadoes also touched down Washington and Oregon, including two in the Spokane area.
  • May 12
A violent derecho struck the Upper Midwest, spawning tornadoes. A high-end EF2 tornado struck near Gary, South Dakota. Three other EF2 tornadoes hit South Dakota and Minnesota.
  • May 20–21
An EF3 tornado hit Gaylord, Michigan, killing two people and injuring 44. This is the only tornado in Gaylord in official NWS records, going back to 1950. The same weather system produced a derecho in Ontario which killed 10 people and spawned several tornadoes.
  • May 30
A tornado outbreak hit the Upper Midwest, with most of the tornadoes touching down in South Dakota and Minnesota. An EF3 tornado near Goodwin, South Dakota carried a grain bin 1 mile (1.6 km).
