19th century[edit]
- 1864 – An immigrant train traveling from Quebec City to Montreal, Quebec, falls into the Richelieu River at Belœil, Quebec, after failing to stop for a signal at an open swing bridge, killing 99 people;[1] the St-Hilaire train disaster, as it has come to be known, is so far the rail accident with the largest passenger death toll in Canada.[2][3]
- 1896 – The St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad Company (predecessor of the St. Louis - San Francisco Railway) is incorporated.[4][5]
20th century[edit]
- 1905 – New Haven Railroad acquires control of Branford Lighting and Water Company.[6]
- 1914 – The maiden trip on the Portland–Lewiston Interurban is made when the car Arbutus carries an inspection trip from Lewiston to Portland, Maine.[7]
- 1933 – Portland–Lewiston Interurban ends regular service on its line in Maine.[8]
- 1934 – The Southern Railway renames the Southern Belle passenger train (between London and Brighton, England) to Brighton Belle.[9]
- 1940 – Syracuse Transit Corporation closes the South Salina and Nedrow lines in Syracuse, New York.
- 1947 – The Milwaukee Road inaugurates the Olympian Hiawatha passenger train between Chicago, Illinois and Tacoma, Washington.[10] Simultaneously, the railroad revives the Columbian, operating on the same route.[11]
- 1949 – The final day of steam locomotive service on the Monon Railroad as the Monon becomes one of the first Class I railroads in America to fully convert to diesel motive power.[12]
