19th century[edit]
- 1869 – The golden spike is driven at Promontory Summit, Utah, on the First Transcontinental Railroad in North America.
- 1873 – The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, building westward from Kansas, reaches Granada, Colorado.[1]
- 1893 – New York Central locomotive number 999 pulls a passenger train between Batavia and Buffalo, New York, reaching 112.5 mph (181.1 km/h); this is the first time an American train breaks 100 mph (160 km/h).
20th century[edit]
- 1997 – Amtrak ceases operations of the Chicago–Los Angeles Desert Wind passenger train.
21st century[edit]
- 2002 – The Potters Bar rail crash occurs at Potters Bar, north of London, England, when a northbound passenger train derails at high speed, killing seven and seriously injuring another eleven.
- 2004 – Canadian National Railway acquires Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad and Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway.
- 2013 – Norfolk Southern Railway announces the appointment of James A. Squires to become the railroad's new president effective June 1.[2]
