One of the first ten TCDD high-speed train sets purchased from CAF of Spain. The first high-speed rail line in Turkey, connecting Eskişehir and Ankara, will use trains of this type to allow speeds of up to 250 km/h (160 mph).

A train loaded with karri logs in Deanmill, Western Australia, in the 1920s. Each log is loaded on a pair of disconnect log cars that consist merely of a bogie, couplers and a swiveling frame; the logs themselves form part of the car much like a schnabel car.

The track side of Masarykovo nádraží station (also known as Masaryk railway station) in Prague, Czech Republic, as seen in November 2008. Designed by Antonín Jüngling and opened in 1845, it is the oldest station in Prague.

A passenger train operated by Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) heading eastbound toward Calgary circa 1973. On April 1, 1978, Canadian National Railway's (CN) passenger subsidiary Via Rail became a separate Crown corporation, taking with it possession of former CN passenger cars and locomotives. Following several months of negotiation, on October 29, 1978, Via took over operation of CP passenger train services, along with similar possession of cars and locomotives.

The original Football World Championship Train from 1954 at Altenbeken railway station, Germany, for the 2007 Vivat Viadukt celebrations. On the first weekend in July of odd-numbered years, Altenbeken celebrates its railway heritage with this festival of transportation.

The tracks leading to Union Station in Washington, D.C., as seen from the station building between 1909 and 1932. Union Station opened on October 27, 1908; the first train to serve the station was a Baltimore and Ohio Railroad passenger train arriving from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. During World War II, as many as 200,000 people passed through the station in a single day.

The freight marshalling yard at Eastleigh, England, in 1984 as seen from Eastleigh railway station. The yard is adjacent to the former Eastleigh Works, a steam locomotive and rolling stock construction and repair facility which was first opened by the London and South Western Railway in 1891.

Military leaders gathered in the forest of Compiègne, France, on November 11, 1918, after reaching an agreement for the armistice that ended World War I. This passenger car was given to Ferdinand Foch (second from right) for military use by the manufacturer, Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits.

Three electric locomotives (two stationary and one in operation) of Deutsche Reichsbahn at Dresden, East Germany, in 1981. Both the Reichsbahn and Deutsche Bundesbahn continued as separate entities until 1994 (four years after German reunification), when they merged to form Deutsche Bahn.

An RhB freight train carrying cement and wood rounds a curve soon after departing Ilanz bound for Chur, Switzerland, in September 2008. The train, powered by a Ge 6/6 II, counts 27 cars, a long train for such a winding narrow gauge line.

The canopy on platform 2 of Kettering railway station in England as seen in 2004. The station was opened in May 1857 by the Midland Railway; it was designed by C. H. Driver, with particularly fine "pierced grill" cast ironwork on the platforms. Although it was altered between 1879 and 1884 when the line was quadrupled and again in 1896, Kettering station is one of the best remaining examples of Midland architecture.

At a station on the Valencia regional 1,000 mm (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) gauge network in 1987, a then current FEVE train loads and discharges passengers while a disused train stands on a nearby track.

A drawing of Japanese National Railways Type 151 passenger train. This model train set the land speed record for narrow gauge rail vehicles in 1959 when it was operated at 163 km/h (101 mph) on the Tōkaidō Main Line.

Transloading coal from railroad hopper cars to ships involved first getting the coal out of the hoppers and then transferring it onto the ships. Here, the hopper cars are pushed up a short incline by a car pusher where the cars' bottom doors are opened and the coal is emptied by gravity. The coal is then carried up the structure, in this case in bucketloads via an elevator system, and loaded onto the ships.

Preserved Norfolk & Western 1218 pulling an excursion train in Fall 1987. This 2-6-6-4 locomotive was built in by Norfolk and Western Railway 1943 at its Roanoke Shops in Roanoke, Virginia; it was retired in 1959, restored to operating condition in 1987, and is now on static display at the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

A train crew exchanges block occupancy tokens at a junction on the Conwy Valley Line in north Wales. Possession of the token authorizes the train to enter the next section of track and ensures that no other train is operating in that section to prevent collisions.

A young H.N. Fretwell sitting atop a three-wheeled draisine fitted with a revolution counter near Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, on the 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in) gauge Kurrawang Wood Line. This draisine was used to periodically measure the length of track sections to ensure accurate track usage billing.

Built in 1841 using 11 million bricks, the Ouse Valley Viaduct over the River Ouse on the London-Brighton Railway Line is 1,475 feet (450 m) long, 96 feet (29 m) high and is carried on 37 semi-circular arches with pierced piers. This photograph shows the view through the pierced piers along the length of the viaduct.

On June 8, 1968, a funeral train carried the body of assassinated presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy from New York City to Washington, D.C., via the Pennsylvania Railroad. Paul Fucso, a photographer for Look magazine, rode the train and captured around 2000 images of the thousands of people from many different sections of society who lined the tracks along the route to pay their last respects.
