1893: The "Sea Islands Hurricane" made landfall near Savannah, Georgia, killing more than 1,000 people.

1909: A major hurricane struck the city of Monterrey, Mexico, bringing flooding that destroyed half the city and killed an estimated 4,000 people.

1947: The Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service was founded.

1989: Hurricane Kiko struck the southern tip of Baja California as a category 3 hurricane, but caused no deaths.

2020: Hurricane Laura made landfall near Cameron, Louisiana, with maximum sustained winds of 150 miles per hour (240 km/h). Severe wind damage occurred in the city of Lake Charles, including the destruction of the NEXRAD weather radar site.
