Ski Canada

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ski Canada is a special-interest consumer magazine published for alpine (downhill) ski enthusiasts. The magazine is published by Solstice Publishing Inc. based in Toronto, Ontario.[citation needed] It was launched in 1972 in a newspaper format as Ski Canada Journal and changed to its present name and magazine format in 1974 (ISSN 0702-701X[1]).[2] It was launched by Col. Terry Whelpton with a focus on ski racing. In 1979, the magazine was purchased by Maclean Hunter Ltd. Editorial focus evolved to include all aspects of alpine skiing including gear reviews and ski tests, ski resort reports, instruction and commentary. In 1990, Maclean Hunter sold the magazine to Solstice Publishing Inc.[citation needed]

The magazine covers resorts, parks, competitive and adventure skiing, interviews, and equipment reviews. Featured photographs of skiers preparing themselves at mountain peaks, skiing down near-vertical slopes and plunging into deep powdery snow have been described by sociologist Mark Stoddart as the skiing equivalent of soft-core pornography.[3] In a study of North American skiing magazines, Stoddart found that Ski Canada contributed toward the perception of elite skiing country being a gendered space for "athletic, risk-seeking masculinity".[3]
