109th Regiment of Foot (Bombay Infantry)2nd Batallion, Leinster Regiment — The most recent name of the unit is 2nd Batallion, Leinster Regiment, whereas it has also gone through the names 3rd Bombay European Regiment from 1853 - 1862, 109th Regiment of Foot from 1862 - 1881 and finally 2nd Batallion, Leinster Regiment from 1881 - 1922. I this this would be overly confusing, to be honest - all the other pre-1881 regiments are at their regimental numbers, not titled as 1st or 2nd battalion of the merged unit. Shimgray | talk | 16:42, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

In such a case, I don't know what to do - should I make separate articles for each of the three forms or just stuff the article with info about all three forms in separate sections? I got a lot of info on the 3rd Europeans and it's written in the Manual of Style that the most recent name should be used....what is to be done? --MT (talk) 16:51, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

I suggest the 3rd European and 109th Regiment should be redirected to 2nd Battalion, Leinster Regiment, if the name is changed--MT (talk) 16:53, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

It's true that the most recent name should be used, but there's an important caveat here - there's more than just the name which changed in 1881. There's a clear "change" between the 109th and the 2nd/Leinsters, so it makes sense to treat them separately, with the content at Leinster Regiment
The question then becomes, was there a similar clear change for the HEIC units in 1862? There isn't really any content on the page at the moment, but on the whole, there probably was - so the best bet might be to create a new article at 3rd Bombay European Regiment and put the pre-1862 material there.
