The title of this page is not historically correct, but I have not found a way to edit a page title, so I must leave it to the moderators to make the correction. The correct name of this Battalion was '123rd Overseas Battalion, C.E.F., Royal Grenadiers' (note the difference in punctuation between the page title and the correct title). The correct name was authorized by His Royal Highness, the Governor General of Canada in December 1915. A transcription of the letter from the Assistant Adjutant General, 2nd Division (Canadian Expeditionary Force) is as follows:

Toronto Canada December 22nd 1915

From A. A. G. 2nd Division.

  Exhibition Camp.

To: O.C. 123rd Overseas Battalion. C.E.F.

  71. Bay St. City.

123rd Overseas Battalion. C.E.F? [sic]

  Designation

I beg to inform you that his Royal Highness, the Governor General approves of the 123rd Overseas Battalion, C.E.F. assuming a sub-title of the Royal Grenadiers, indicating its association with the 10th Regiment, Royal Grenadiers. It will therefore be designated the 123rd Overseas Battalion, C.E.F. Royal Grenadiers.

G'day, thanks for this. You mention a primary source document; however, Wikipedia prefers secondary sources. Do you have access to any secondary sources that you can check for how they present this unit's designation? Equally, is it possible that the title changed over time? I'm not at all knowledgeable on Canadian infantry battalions, but if they were like Australian battalions, their designations changed a couple of times. I wish I could figure out how to respond to AustralianRupert's comment below, but there does not appear to be an option to REPLY. You are correct that the informal name of the Battalion changed over time, but the official name did not. My book that chronicles the history of the 123rd Battalion, which will be released later this year under ISBN 978-1-927822-05-0. There are no other definitive secondary references about this Battalion, before my book. I hope this is sufficient. Unfortunately, the original author of this article was not challenged to provide factual and historically accurate details, so it is somewhat awkward to have to defend the correct information.
