Delta Battery[edit]

"the only field artillery battalion in the U. S. Army with a fourth firing battery, designated "D" Battery"

Regardless of the 129th web page, there are other FA battalions with a D battery. A web search will show this as well as my personal experience. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 02:39, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good point to raise, but I tried a web search, and I didn't find any FA Battalions having a D firing battery in current US Army organization. My own Army experience harks from the mid-70's to mid-80s, including infantry and field artillery, and I never ever saw a D battery at all. Not saying there wasn't any, but I didn't see any. On the other hand, you may be missing a detail here. The claim is that there is no other firing battery designated D in any current FA battalion. Now, I know of one current D battery, and that one is in 18th Fires Bde at Ft. Bragg. However, it is an independent battery (from the standpoint of not being a part of a battalion), and is not a firing battery, it is a target acquisition battery. An examination of the current TO&E indicates that firing battalions only have three firing batteries. These would be designated A, B and C, normally, although in a search I did find that one of the Divarty battalions of the 82nd Airborne has firing batteries A, B and G, oddly enough. I searched the web pages of a number of active divisions and did not find any D batteries in firing battalions, where this information was available. The evidence seems to bear out 129th FA's claim, at least in the present. Cyberherbalist (talk) 22:21, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
All of the FA battalions under the 434th FA Bde have at least five batteries,[1] but it is a training brigade. But the 1/5 FA does have a Delta Battery.[2] (see the contact info) As to past, the three FA battalions under the 56th Field Artillery Command had four firing batteries. The unit with A, B and G batteries had a D deployed to Italy, but it was deactivated and reformed as a HHB. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 02:06, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Good catch on the 1/5 FA. I checked that unit's page out, but I guess I didn't look closely enough at every link. OK, it is clear that the 129th FA claim isn't quite correct. I believe they have a special claim to having a D battery due to Truman's having commanded that battery in WW1 (or, I believe they believe it), but it isn't unique. There is no official documentation I can find that their D battery exists because of Truman, but it may be the case. We should downgrade the claim in the article to match the facts. On an unrelated note, the Brigade Heavy Combat Team that 1/5 FA is part of is something new to my experience: an infantry division brigade with actual armor and artillery organized as organic to the brigade. The TO&E must have changed, because that particular organization structure doesn't match the 1998 version. Slick, actually. Cyberherbalist (talk) 18:10, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I modified the statement about their D battery. I don't know if you concur as to my choice of words; feel free to make corrections as you see fit. Cyberherbalist (talk) 18:20, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Looks OK to me. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 20:22, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have corrected this. I used to train this unit. They don't have a C Battery, instead they have a D Battery. I just checked, and that remains the case today. CsikosLo (talk) 13:33, 29 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pic of Capt. Harry Truman[edit]

Do we really need an image of Capt. Truman in this article? It seems to do more to clutter up the article than enhance it, and there's a perfectly good article about Truman himself. If there were more text to offset it, perhaps, but in my humble opinion I think we should lose the image. Cyberherbalist (talk) 05:01, 7 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
