Overall record[edit]

The 5–2 record listed in Idaho State's media guide, and the team's online season-by-season records, appears to be based on the 1940 Wickiup college yearbook. Results for the team's first six games are supported by contemporary newspaper reports, although the Wickiup differs by one point in the score of the Albion Normal game. The result for the team's seventh (and final) game is in question. The yearbook entry has an awkward tone, first describing that game as "an anti-climax", yet then stating the Bengals won the game. Contemporary newspaper reports from the day after the game, both locally in California and by the United Press, are clear that Chaffey College won the game. That result would give the Bengals a 4–3 record, rather than the claimed 5–2. Football records online for Chaffey College (here) only go back to 1986.
