Participating delegations[edit]

Does someone know which are the 23 nations that took part in these Paralympic Games?

I don't know. But the IPC says quite clearly that only 17 countries actually sent athletes to compete. (Presumably, the other 6 countries, whichever they were, sent only officials, such as judges.) I deleted the 17 and 138 sentence. At first I believed it was 138 medal winners listed at the source [1], but now I believe it means 138 participating athletes if one does not count the team members and such, since it says such information might be missing. And it wouldn't add up if there were 291 medals for 138 participating athletes. Another site at paralympics.org says there were 400 [2]. (That would mean that there are 262 athletes missing from the paralympics database though.) Bib (talk) 19:34, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Note that the IPC was not the organizer of the event in 1960. It has attempted to reconstruct the history, from various sources (including the initial organizer and photos or videos from international medias) but now officially states (in several videos it shares on Youtube) that there were 23 countries and (about?) 400 participants competing in 8 recognized sports. The 17 countries are those that won medals in these 8 sports (and the IPC site only lists the medalists).

The IPC is currently in the process of reconstructing a better archive, as for now it only has reliable data about medalists and still does not give extensive statistics for the rest. I think it is open to open contributions (notably identifiable photos and videos) to help the IPC rebuild the history archives.

On these photos or videos, we can clearly see at least Greece and Belgium participants and their carrying flags (at opening ceremonies or in a celebration in Vaticano), even if they did not win any medals. So there are 4 other countries missing. And the number competing athletes are clearly underestimated (possibly counting only the final rounds? or excluding accompanying people, assistance members, or judges if they were present at the ceremonies?). verdy_p (talk) 13:04, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Don't know, as the Channel4 site link is only accessible from UK (as indicated by the site itself). If someone has an Internet provider in UK (or a VPN hosted in UK, unless the Channel4 site blocks access from open VPNs) we could better check this. verdy_p (talk) 13:14, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
