Note surrounding the names: 1963-64[edit]

Since several of the names used in a Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone seasons pre 1980 have been lost to time, I am writing a note on each of the talkpages to explain where I got the names from. I am hoping to rediscover these names, in order to update List of historical tropical cyclone names (LOHTCN) and season articles as well as to give editors a better idea of who named what. As of April 13, 2022, LOHTCN currently shows that the names Bessie, Carmen, Dora, Eva, Gertie, Hazel and Katie were used in the Australian region during 1963-64. It also shows that the names: Audrey, Bertha, Edith, Gertie and Henrietta were used in the South Pacific basin. The sources cited were the Old Australian Database, the NZMS summary; "Tropical Storms and Hurricanes in the Southwest Pacific: November 1939 – April 1969", a book written by Ana Maria d’Aubert & Patrick D. Nunn entitled Furious Winds and Parched Islands, Tropical Cyclone Impacts along the Australian east coast from November to April 1858–2000 a document written by a former BoM TC forecaster: Jeff Callaghan.

I have since managed to obtain a copy of Tropical Cyclones in the Australian Region from July 1909 to June 1980 which shows that the names Audrey (GOC), Bessie (WA), Berthe (CS), Carmen (GOC), Dora (GOC), Gertie (CS), Henrietta (CS/NC) and Katie (WA) were used in the Australian Region during 1963-64. However, the summary does not show that the names Eva, Edith, Bertha or Hazel were used or those names that did not impact Australia but were assigned by the BoM to systems in the Indian Ocean. There was no Met-Mar summary for the season while the NZMS summary shows that the names: Bertha, Edith, Gertie and Henrietta were used, states that Gertie was located to the east of 160E and leaves the names Eva and Hazel to be sourced. Furious Winds provides the names Bertha, Edith and Henrietta, while East Coast Impacts provides Audrey and Gertie.

I have subsequently come across a seasonal summary/book from the BoM entitled: Tropical Cyclones in the Northeastern and Northwestern Australian Regions for 1963-1964 Season. This provides the names Audrey, Berthe, Dora, Gertie and Henrietta on one list, while another list provides the names Bessie, Eva, Hazel, Katie and Norma. I have also found an article in the Mariners Weather Log which talked about the BoM starting to name tropical cyclones. The article confirmed that this was the first season of TC naming in the Aussie region and that each of the three warning centres (Perth, Darwin and Brisbane) each had a naming list with every third letter assigned to them. (Eg: Brisbane was allocated A, D, G etc, Perth were allocated B, E, H etc while Darwin was allocated C, F, I etc). A copy of the list is replicated here for further use, with names assigned by Mauritius/Madagascar/New Caledonia/Nadi included as a separate list. A year on and I have today decided to come down to the British Library in London, where I have been able to view a copy of Tropical Cyclones in the Northeastern and Northwestern Australian Regions for 1963-1964 Season which was published by the BoM in May 1966. The book is basically an extended version of the seasonal summaries published in the Australian Meteorological Magazine and contains reports on: Audrey, Berthe, Dora, Gertie and Henrietta for the Eastern Region and Bessie, Eva, Hazel, Katie and Norma for the Western Region. I have tweaked the table below to better reflect what was and wasn't used by the various warning centres in Perth/Brisbane as well as Madagascar, Mauritius, Fiji & New Caledonia. A report on Tropical Cyclone Carmen was later provided in Tropical Cyclones in the Northern Australian Regions for 1965-1966 Season, having been overlooked as it didn't move into either the Western or Eastern Regions.Jason Rees (talk) 12:23, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The book is basically an extended version of the seasonal summaries published in the Australian Meteorological Magazine and contains reports on Rita, Edna (Maurtius naming), Una, Annie, Dolly, Gay(-Olive), Joan, Mavis and Ruth for the Western Region as well as Flora, Marie and Judy in the Northern and Eastern regions.. It also contains a report on The Douglas Mawson Tropical Cyclone of 1923 and notes that TCWC Darwin had only just been set up at the start of the season. However, the summary does not include the names Alice, Carol, Gisele, Martha and Nancy or those names that were assigned by the BoM to systems in the Indian Ocean. The NZMS summary only shows that 1 tropical cyclone was named during the season: Connie, while neither Furious winds or East Coast Impacts provide any names for the 1965-66 season. As in previous seasons, I came across a seasonal summary from the BoM entitled: Tropical cyclones in the Northern Australian regions for 1965-1966 season, however, I have not been able to find a preview of this book as yet.

A look at the MetMar summary for the 1965-66 South Indian Ocean cyclone season suggests that Anne, Judith and Kay moved in from the Australian region but provides no hints to their Australian names. An article in the Torres News via Trove entitled Cyclone Season, informs the readers that the naming lists were changed at the start of the season and started with Amanda, Alice, Betty, Carol, Connie, Daisy and Debbie. It also confirms that Perth, Darwin and Brisbane were each using the names, but does not give the whole list or a breakdown on what name appears on what list. IBTRACS serves as a source for [Alice and shows that Amanda was Gisele, Carol became Daisy, Martha became Judith, Nancy became Kay. As things stand, it appears that the names Alice, Amanda, Betty, Carol, Connie, Daisy, Gisele, Joy, Lisa, Martha and Nancy were used in the Australian region during 1965-66 and LOHTCN has been updated.Jason Rees (talk) 00:50, 22 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

After viewing it in the British Library today: Tropical Cyclones in the Northern Australian Regions 1968-1969 season shows that the names Amy, Betsy, Doreen, Bertha, Ella and Gina were used in the Western Region, while Bertha & Bonnie were used in the Northern region and Brisbane used Annie, Brenda, Dixie and Giselle. It appears that Irene was not named by Brisbane.
