Note surrounding the names[edit]

Since several of the names used in a Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone seasons pre 1980 have been lost to time, I am writing a note on each of the talkpages to explain where I got the names from. I am hoping to rediscover these names, in order to update List of historical tropical cyclone names (LOHTCN) and season articles as well as to give editors a better idea of who named what. As of April 13, 2022, LOHTCN currently shows that the names Alice, Dolly, Emma, Fanny, Gillian, Helen and Isa were used in the South Pacific region during 1969-70. It also shows that the names: Ada, Blossom, Cindy, Dawn, Diane, Dolly, Florence, Glynis, Harriet, Ingrid, Isa, Judy, Kathy and Lulu were used in the Australian region. The sources provided in LOHTCN are the old BoM BT Database, the NZMS summary; "Tropical Cyclones in the Southwest Pacific: November 1969 – May 1979", a book written by Ana Maria d’Aubert & Patrick D. Nunn entitled Furious Winds and Parched Islands, Tropical Cyclone Impacts along the Australian east coast from November to April 1858–2000 a document written by a former BoM TC forecaster: Jeff Callaghan and a book written by James P Terry entitled Tropical Cyclone Climatology and Impacts in the South Pacific. I have also managed to obtain a copy of the BoM summary: Tropical Cyclones in the Australian Region from July 1909 to June 1980

The NZMS Summary clearly shows that the names Ada, Dawn, Dolly, Emma, Gillian, Helen and Isa were used for tropical cyclones that season. It further shows that the cyclone named Dawn moved into the SPAC basin, while the names Emma, Gillian & Helen were used for TCs to the east of 180° However, based on this document alone, it is not clear who named Ada, Dolly or Isa as they were located near the border of 160E. The BoM Summary clearly shows that the cyclones Ingrid, Lulu and Glynis were first detected in the Northern & Western Regions, while Ada, Cindy, Dawn, Florence, and Isa were first detected in the Eastern Region.

Furious Winds and Parched Islands shows that the names: Ada, Dolly, Emma, Fanny, Gillian, Helen and Isa were used in the South Pacific during the 1969-70 season. However, in June 1970 the BoM released a TCR on Cyclone Ada due to its impacts, which quite clearly states on Page 3, that they named Ada after it had moved into the Australian Region. An article in the Meteorological Society of New Zealand's Weather and Climate Journal entitled What's in a name?, shows that this was the first season of the NZMS (Fiji) naming tropical cyclones in the South Pacific with the first name used being Alice.Jason Rees (talk) 01:56, 16 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
