There are several problems with the article, including two major issues. Here are the major issues with the article:

  • There is no "Season summary" section; you yourself said (here) that GA tropical cyclone season articles should have that section.
    • Nah, you misunderstood me. I meant it should have a season summary, but not necessarily that section. Just something to sum up the season chronologically, which 1971 does do in the lede. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:01, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • The section of Hurricane Ginger is "word-for-word" with the lede in its main article.
    • Yea, deliberate. I do that often. The lede should, in theory, perfectly summarize the article. If it does that, then what would be better in the section? That said, I tweaked it a bit per the first item in Lede below. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:01, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have numerous minor issues:

Lede
  • "At the time, Hurricane Ginger was the longest-lived Atlantic hurricane..." - I have two issues. First, "At the time", with the previous sentence, it seems like Ginger was the longest-lived Atlantic hurricane when Edith made landfall in Louisiana. Second, Ginger was the longest-lived Atlantic hurricane at the time, so it was longer-lived then the 1899 San Ciriaco hurricane?
    • I tweaked it to "longest known duration", which is technically true based on the wording. The 1899 was not known to have been longer until 2003. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:01, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • "...it is currently the second longest-lasting Atlantic hurricane." - So judging the previous part of the sentence, it appears that something has surpassed this record since then.
    • Yep, the 1899 San Ciriaco hurricane. I added that to Ginger's section, but I didn't want to clutter up the lede too much. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:01, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • "With thirteen tropical storms, of which six became hurricanes, the season was active." - So it wasn't "fairly active" like stated in the opening sentence?

  • Delink: East Coast of the United States and North Carolina
Unnamed Hurricane
  • "On August 6, a drilling rig about 230 mi (370 km) southeast of Newfoundland..." - Are you sure it was a "drilling rig" and not an oil platform? Because "drilling rigs" are actually on land (according to the "drilling rig" article), and that one is in the Atlantic 230 miles southeast of Newfoundland. Either way, wikilink whatever term that you use.
    • Drilling rig is what the MWR says. I didn't think it was that confusing of a term, but I'll link it anyway. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:01, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hurricane Beth
  • "Halifax International Airport reported 10.49 in (266 mm)..." - Wikilink inches and millimetres
Tropical Storm Doria
  • "...peaking at 10.29 inches (261 mm) in Little Falls." - Abbreviate inches and millimetres
Hurricane Fern
  • In the second paragraph of Fern, several units of measure are abbreviate like in the rest of the article, such as inches, miles per hour, and feet.
  • "...Fern left two indirect deaths and moderate damage totaling $30.2 million dollars (1971 USD, $159 million 2011 USD." - Erase "dollars" since the dollar sign is already in front of 30.2 million, BTW, there is no closing parenthesis for the "1971 USD, $159 million 2011 USD".
Hurricane Edith
  • Delink: "Category 5 hurricane", "Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale", and "Texas".
    • OK. I thought it'd be helpful having a link to C5 and SSHS in that section, but I guess not. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:01, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Damage in the United States totaled $25 million (1971 USD]], $136 million 2011 USD)." - Why is there two brackets after "1971 USD"?
Hurricane Irene
  • "...about 800 miles (1300 km) east of the Windward Islands." - Abbreviate miles, and add a comma to 1300
    • I abbreviated mi, but I didn't add the comma to 1300. I don't like how that looks, and it's the editor's option. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:01, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • "...Hurricane Irene caused more than $1 million (USD) in damage to the banana crop." - Add inflation template to $1 million
    • Darn, I was hoping that would slip by ;) I figured since it was only a million, it didn't really need an inflation, since it's just a nice round estimate. Do you still want it inflated? --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:01, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Same issue, add a comma to "685 mi (1100 km)"
Tropical Storm Laura
  • "Across the island, the storm produced heavy rainfall, peaking at 32.5 inches (83 cm)." - Abbreviate inches; BTW, why it this converted to centimetres?

Reference
  • Watch for date consistency, you have "1971-06-01" on ref #1, and August 17, 1971 on ref #9.
  • Spell out "NOAA" on reference #22
  • BTW, I am not going to require you do this, but I would recommend this: update some of the accessdates, as some of them apparently were accessed in about 4 1/2 years.

  • Why is there "1971 in Florida" as a category, there was barely any affects from hurricanes in Florida in 1971; then why is this category not on the bottom of the 2004 or 2005 AHS?
