Harmon and Middlecoff Withdrawals[edit]

The article says that Harmon withdrew "during" the first round and that Middlecoff withdrew "during" the second round. I question that phraseology, even though it comes from newspaper reports at the time. I believe that the sportswriter who wrote that did not mean that the two former champions literally walked off the course in the middle of their rounds which is what "during" connotes.

My best guess is that Middlecoff signed for his first-round 75, and then decided to not play the second round. And I guess that Harmon had a poor first round and did not sign his scorecard, thereby withdrawing. So Harmon's withdrawal would have been reported in the write-ups of the first round whereas Middlecoff's withdrawal would not have been known to the sportswriters until the day of the second round.

Can anyone shed light on this matter? I think we should probably get this resolved one way or the other since withdrawing "during" a round is a serious no-no for a professional golfer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Whosnext23 (talkcontribs) 23:58, 25 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Unless you can find a source to backup your guess then it is just that. Withdrawing during a round happens al the time, but rarely in the Masters. Tewapack (talk) 04:11, 26 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Jeez, the reason I posted my original comment was to alert others to the possibility so that they could either post information or research the issue at their convenience. The core strength of wikipedia, after all, is asynchronous distributed knowledge. The quality of these Masters tournament pages is spotty, to say the least, so I have come not to believe everything that appears on them. Whosnext23 (talk) 23:58, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
