Comment[edit]

The article states that the president of Togo was not the sole surviver, but the information tooltip in the top right of the actual crash indicates 5 on plane, and 4 fatalities. Can somebody please read the original french and determine the actual count on the plane? Zkbt (talk) 16:23, 14 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

facts about the Sarakawa plane crash[edit]

There are different accounts of the crash. According to the most reliable sources, the DC3 of the Togolese army was surcharged. The max. capacity of 14 persons (plus two pilots) had been exceeded by five additional passengers. In addition, construction material (cement bags, etc.) and other goods carried by the entourage of the President contributed to the overcharge. The two French pilots, Jean Catin, and his co-pilot, had objected in vain, last but not least in view of the bad airstrip in the small village Sarakawa (near Pya, the home village of Eyadéma), the destination of the plane. Among the other passengers where Commander Bertrant Delaire, a French military advisor of Eyadéma. During the landing approach, the plane crashed. Of the five addittional passengers, who had no security belts, four died, as well as the pilot and co-pilot. All the other 14, who had been secured by security belts, survived.
